It's about time for the Ranger's first trans service, and I'm having kind of a hard time deciding between Valvoline's Mercon V or Maxlife. The trans specifically calls for Mercon V, not regular Mercon, so I was leaning towards the Mercon V. But looking at Valvoline's product data sheet, it says it's offically licensed for Mercon V, not just "recommended." So now I'm kind of leaning towards Maxlife, especially since I already use it in my other 2 vehicles.

The Valvoline Mercon V is a full synthetic ATF. I don't believe maxlife is.

I emailed Valvoline a while back, and they said Maxlife is full synthetic, made from a mix of Group 4 and 5 base oils.

Mercon V is no longer a full synthetic. They changed the formula.

I believe you, but I do not believe what that Valvoline employee wrote. Not a chance.

I wouldn't move to MaxLife until there were signs of aging or at least until there were lots of miles on it. I wouldn't entertain it for at least 100,000 miles and possibly not until 150,000 miles.
