i just changed my oil yesterday from mobil syn blend with a wix filter (which is the combo i ALWAYS use) to maxlife with a fram tough guard (since it was a combo price special at autozone) now i have some lifter noise, i used 5w30 like my dakota is suppose to have and my oil pressure gauge is sitting were it always does, so this doesn't make sense to me.
valvoline maxlife = valve noise?

must be the orange can lol j/k seems strange though, I've always read good things about the Maxlife...
The tough guard has the same construction as the regular fram, the media is different.
I forget does the tough guard have a silicone adbv? If not that may be your problem. I put a Oreilly Fram clone on my Sierra and got lifter noise. I would switch to any other manufactuerer or a Xtended guard, and your problems should be gone.

it does have the silicone drain back valve, and the noise is always there, slightly more when cold but always there, it's not bad but it was'nt there before.

I tried it in my gf`s Olds 88 w/3800 V6 and it made the valvetrain tap only once it was good and hot. Cold engine operation was really smooth.
It's that FRAM garbage you used, not the oil!!!

i've also been looking through other treads on this site and have found several complaints about maxlife make engine noise.
Had the same problem with Maxlife. switched to pure synthetic and the engine is smoother.

However, there is a possibility that the engine does not like the oil. Not all engines like every oil and it does not mean the oil is bad. I would swap the filter take it back to autozone and exchange it for a different brand or manufacturer. Or if your rich the xtended guard.
My truck was getting normal pressure with the oreilly fram, but 5 seconds of tick on start-up. Now if the noise is there even after the engine is hot then I probably would rule out the filter.

probably true on the extended gaurd, i think i'll just go back to my previous combo, i've never had any issues with wix filters or mobil syn. blend, but now i'm out $20
