Passed the local Valvo change shop today and business was a little slow. No kidding, all the employees(4 guys in dirty oil change clothes) were standing in front of the business, by the curb, waving their arms in the air and jumping up and down apparently trying to attract new business, I guess. I was embarassed for these guys making a fool of themselves. 4X dummer than anything I have seen lately.

I see what you did there.

"Change your oil every 3,000!" Those guys need the work!

LOL VIOC bought out a local shop I worked for, and it was a total culture shock of a very laid-back and honest approach to one of corporate numbers shenanigans and double-speak. I mean, it was "we want you to be honest and not sell things customers don't need. But you'd better increase tickets and make numbers." Yeah, okay Bob.

I did okay, and they made me a as't manager so I can't complain. I got some good experience at managing people and selling. But my entire shop quit on the same day and walked out over their constant b.s. And we WOULD HAVE NEVER done anything like the above. I had too much homework to get done and wanted to read the newspaper too!

Their market share has declined significantly in the Buffalo area for many reasons. Good customer service and happy employees not being two of them...

I would never patronize a business that had a human being standing on the roadside waving their arms.I see it all the time up and down US19 here in FL.It's a new fad in advertising. For the owner/manager of a business to be so brazen as to think I would give up money based on public displays of humiliation rather than their reputation,or in spite of it,is mistaken. It just makes that business look like a gimmick. If that was my place, and those techs had nothing else to do,that shop would be clean enough to eat off of.

It's not just longer drain intervals. I think beginning in the 1990s, everyone thought they could be profitable putting a quick lube on every corner. I never saw that as a very promising business model; especially with a plethora of dealerships, Wal-Marts, and hacks ripping people off and not bothering to do their jobs properly...

I truely felt bad for those guys. Very unprofessional and degrading.

Good call.

Totally misguided managerial response. Instead of paying the techs to go outside to flail around and air out their pits, put up a sign that says "Oil Change Special $19.99." ( I paid that the other day at a VIOC store.) While they are waiting for the onslaught, they can use the time to clean the shop area. I hadn't been in one for a while but decided to try it again when they mailed the $19.99 coupon. Let's just say that there will be a deep freeze in an overly warm climate before I go back to one again.

Yeah really, standing near the road waving is more like something a streetwalker would do than techs changing fluids on cars. I think it would drive customers away more than anything.

I get my oil changed when my odometer reads at/around the mileage on my previous oil change sticker

Not based on some dudes waving signs at the street :)

Now if they were hawt chicks waving signs, I might have to let them change my oil and give me that lube job.

I think I've seen both valvoline and jiffy lube employees standing outside with a sign that says "no wait" or something like that. Not a bad idea having a no wait sign, jumping around is just dumb.

The corner sign-wavers are all over southern California and San Diego. I feel bad for them, but at least they're getting paid.

I have seen them out on the street in this area as well.

paint "lube service for $19.99" on their backsides and have them stand on the corner. They would get some business then.

Was it in Oak Lawn? I think I saw the same thing...

We have the same thing around here, valvoline and other oil change place guys on the corner waving, chickens in front of resturants, statue of liberty guys in front of tax services, scantily clad young ladys on corners in the city-not sure what they are advertising?

Couldn't agree more. Off of McMullen Booth road in Palm Harbor there is a puppy mill shop that often has a guy in a dog costume stand on the road with a sign that says "Puppies!" all through June, July, and August! If the manager of that store is willing to do that to a human being, just imagine how much they value the life of the animals there.
