used to run10w40 maxlife in my jeep GC w/ 240,000. Noisey noisey rackity motor. 1/2 qt of PP 5w20 quieted the upper end Greatly, and repeatedly.

The ticking on the 3.3L 2005 toyota went away after I switched from M1 to Synpower and hasn't returned. Both were 5-30. Maybe there is something to opinion that you got to find the right oil for you engine. Then again, valvetrain tick may not mean anything anyway. But for now I will stay with the Synpower in that car. Also, I changed the oil filter from Bosch to Mobil 1, maybe that has something to do with it too.

A LONG time ago, I had a nasty tick in the 2.0 bubble-block Audi that went away ONCE, and it was from the oil. I was out West in Colorado and used a coupon for a Sears oil change. Car came back with zero tick until I changed again (iirc). Was it the hydrolic lifters? Nope, it was a cylindrical vacuum pump rod that ran off the camshaft. Years later I learned about the problem and the fix, simply removing the 1/2 cigar-sized rod that drove the vacuum booster...it was simply not necessary. What was the lesson? I dunno.

I just recently changed my oil to Pennzoil Platinum after using Valvoline for the first 2 oil changes, then Havoline, then Amsoil, then 2 more rounds of Havoline and I truly feel like my engine is quieter with the Platinum. I've always thought my engine was slightly noisy and I didn't think the oil brand mattered much in terms of noise because it sounded the same with Valvoline, Amsoil and Havoline (All 5W-30) but both myself and my mom both noticed that my engine seemed quieter and actually a little bit smoother. Granted, this was directly after my 2nd run of Auto-RX so some cleaning from the Auto-RX may have contributed to the smoothness/noise reduction. Regardless, very happy with PP so far.

my brothers high mileage nissan P/U (over 200K) develops a tick a few thou after an oil change. change it, whatever brand, doesn't matter, ticking goes away. only difference was once, I switched him to amsoil, when the ticking came back, it was LOUD. so loud he freaked and changed it out after only a couple thou.
next step w/ his truck is a auto rx run.
I had an intermittent tick in my MPV, typical for the mazda JE motor. any oil, didn't matter. but, I'm more than 1200miles into a auto rx treatment right now and it's quiet, REAL quiet.

I had an 00 Cirrus with the 2.5 v6 and ran pp 5w20 in that motor for close to 80k miles before I sold it. IT LOVED IT!!!!! never burned a drop.

Edit, Car had 150k miles on it before it was sold with 10k miles changes.

Oh, I've observed valve train noise going away with an oil change, and I've also observed it NOT making any difference. Sometimes hydraulic lifters are just fussy.
