Heres what I have done before and It worked on my wifes 98 Escort several years ago.
Car had similar varnish as your 96. I used Valvoline conventional and 1 full quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for 3 OCI's of 3k miles each.
Came out spotless!
3q of the Valvoline, and 1 of the MMO. used a 25% mix of MMO.

Car ran smooth as silk during this and after too.

Yes, I've posted the before/after pics on here before.

Here's one for you!
I really wanted to say look what ??? brand did for me but figured someone would take it the wrong way.

I'm with you, I don't like the discolouration of the varnish but I don't think it's really an issue for the engine. I have read a post here though that varnish is the precuresor to sludge......

Yeah, it does look that way does not it?

Does anyone know why my rocker arms and springs are more varnished than everything else. Is it the metal they are made from or something else? Picture regarding the 1999 Camaro SS

I wouldn't worry to much about it...really,run a quality synthetic M1,PU,PP,Amsoil etc and she'll be just fine.

stick with a good filter also. @ Lex

Unfortunately I don't know. It's my Son's car, 2000 Saturn SL2. He bought it in November with almost 140000km on it and I pulled the cam cover to do the gasket and this is what I found. I was told the last couple years was GTX x 5000km but not what was done previously. If I had to hazard a guess I would think dealer bulk oil but no idea on an OCI. In another thread someone has said that the OLM in these goes 8-9k miles.

I buttoned it back up and filled it with PCSS 0w30 and have been topping off with the PCD 0w30. Will not be going past 5000km for a while, maybe less and next fill will be all PCD. He has most of can of Seafoam left but haven't decided on using anymore of that. Will pull the cam cover again in the summer and see what we got.
