Here some pics of the valve train on my cars. I am switching to YB Pennzoil on the heavily varnished Camry. Feel free to post pics of your own internal engine! 1999 Camaro SS 5.7 LS1 0-106k miles were supposedly on synthetic but who knows 106k- 114k Mobil 1 10W30 [img:center][/img] [img:center][/img] [img:center][/img] 1996 Toyota Camry 2.2 5SFE 0-190k dino stuff [img:center][/img] [img:center][/img] [img:center][/img] 2000 Toyota Camry 2.2 5SFE 0-60k ? 60K-70K Mobil 1 10W30 [img:center][/img]

I want to run Pennzoil on the 1996 Camry to get rid of the heavy varnish. On the Camaro I will probably run Redline to get the varnish off the rocker arms. The 2000 Camry is the one with the least miles and has been taken care of by the dealer I believe and has been using Mobil 1 10W30 this year.

Run of the mill PYB is not going to get rid of varnish, varnish is hard to get rid of/clean,but doesn't do any harm un like sludge or hard deposits. Varnish just looks bad.

That is not "heavily varnished," LOL. I wish I took pictures of some of the beaters that I drove through the years. You couldn't see any shiny metal on one of them.

I don't know, I used Pennzoil platinum and it did a pretty darn good job of cleaning varnish in a family members 1997 Honda Accord VP I4. I did not take the VC off but the fill hole and dipstick was pretty covered. I had tried to clean the dipstick off with a few different cleaners and none worked. It is gone now just after a month of PP. I never in my life would have thought it cleaned that well, so it is not just a gimmick. I definitely agree it is mostly just cosmetic, varnish is no big deal. It may make the engine run a bit hotter if that. Everything looks pretty good, thanks for the pics. Try some PP or even better PU for at least 5k.

My brother has a V6 1MZFE Toyota Avalon that is known sludger. Would he be able to do 5k mile OCI's with M1 or PU? Kinda off topic LOL but just a question.

Right there synthetic "Pennzoil platinum" would be better as it has better detergents,I'm talking the conventional Pennzoil yellow bottle, PYB.

Those engines both look good for the miles. I would not expect a lot of varnish removal. If you get some you will just be lucky. That engine will likely be running when some other part of the car causes much bigger and more expensive problems. Keep us informed. Thanks

I noticed on my Camaro the rocker arms are the only things varnished from the valve train. Is it the material they are made of?

My 2.8 s10 had alot of components that were a very dark metal to begin with. My rockers were actually black and i have seen many other gm ones black. almost all v-6 and v-8 of the years 1980 - 1995. Your engines for how many miles on them look perfect. and i agree they are just stained. I guess since you are on an oil forum like the rest of us And would like to try to get rid of the stain I would second some PYB changes a little shorter than usual and see if it gets better. I know alot of us on here dont really like engine flushes in most cases but i think this is one case where there is no danger at all since you only have some stains. Thanks for the pics.

I posted same question regarding same engine in an RX300 I maintain. I changed the PCV. Was recommended to run first oil change with PP only 3,000 miles, then extend to 5,000 after that.

The 1MZFE Avalon should be just fine with 5K OCI with Mobil 1 or Penzoil Ultra as asked about. With his particular engine it is super critical to CHECK the PCV valve regularly. The PCV valve (located in the rear valve cover) is known to clog. Once the PCV valve clogs, the motor will develop sludge (or "gel" as Toyota calls it) regardless of what oil you use....as would any motor. For the "long OCI" folks, The 1MZFE motor is not a good candidate for extended Oil Change Intervals. Toyota lists 5K to 7K as a recommended OCI for this motor. I have a 1MZFE motor in my 2003 Sienna. I run Redline 0W-20, which is WAY overkill. The 4 cylinder Toyota engine in the original post looks good. Of course, being a bit obsessed, as most folks on this website are, I would also desire a cosmetic cleaning, but that is really all we are talking about as the motor is just fine. The 2000 Toyota is very good....and the 1996 is also great for 190K on 'dyno'.

^My UOA on MAxlife showed under 3 TBN in 4050 miles. I believe you will be fine for 5k on m1, PP, PU and others synthetics, unless it is short tripper. Just check PCV every oil change, and add MMO as top off oil (up to qt) if car uses oil. And you should be set.

It is a short tripper so he should stick to 3k OCIs I think. Same thing with the Camrys since they are known sludgers as well. Also, I have noticed that vehicles that use Amsoil from the start are very very clean. I wonder if M1 or other synthetic would look similar.

1987 Mustang 5.0L w/338,000Km on it: Rest of the engine looks the same. Has had most of its life in Mobil 1 of various grades. 2001 BMW M5 w/145,000Km on it: Dealer BMW synthetic 5w30. 2001 Ford Focus: No idea what ws run in it. Tried to clean it up with Redline but sold the car. 2002 Ford Expedition 5.4L: ~220,000Km: This is after Redline, which cleaned it up.
