I picked up 2 of these today. #V8A, PH8A/FL1-A style. They are Champion filters. I was comparing them to the STP and Bosch filters they also stock. As far as looks they are identical right down to any stampings or date codes on the filters.

The box says "Exported to Mexico from:USA".

There is no info about the micron rating on the box. The main reason I got them was that there was no metal shavings around the center hole! Thery are $1.99.

Whats everybody think about these? Cant be too bad? Better than a Fram at 3x the price?

Sounds like Autozone has jumped on the store brand wagon to compete with AdvanceAutoParts.
Advance uses purolator, Autozone uses Champion.
Check and see if they are really the same inside as other Champions and let us know..

?

Ive noticed most filters do have metal dust or shavings on the threads. Is this a bad thing? Doesnt most of it just get on the thread nipple on the car and not in the engine?

Next time Im at AutoZone Ill check out the Valuecraft filters. I havent noticed them before. I have noticed ProLine at pep boys, which sit next to the purolator premium plus filters which are exactly the same for $.50-1.00 more.

I look for grossly mis-tapped threads. The Supertech i bought last night had a nice dusting of metal under and around the gasket. Not too much for me to not buy-- but i'll take an oiled cotton swab to it before putting it in place.

ferb!

Good to know there'll be a continuing CHEAP source of Champion filters besides Wally*World in case the latter is really in the process of discontinuing their SuperTech store brand. I've found that the combination of cutting oil and metal shavings present in the exit port threads of Champion filters is easily attended to with a rag dampened with solvent and swiped around the threads. Cleans 'em right out and only takes seconds.

Initially I thought as you do when I read your post, but after further consideration, no, I believe the machining crud would be forced onto the tip of the nipple as the filter is screwed on. Being now subject to the force of the filtered oil as it exits the filter, it would be rinsed free and carried INTO the engine during engine operation.

Looked at the value craft and the STP. There top plate is identical and understandably if they are both made by champion. Both have a AA stamped into the top plate. What is the meaning of this mark?

I looked at these filters today, and through the holes in the center tube, the filter media appears to even be the same color of the STP filters.
