My wife is usually pretty level-headed and practical, but there is something about Vanentine's Day that really screws her up. She really thinks there is something 'special' about this day and that it needs to be celebrated. She doesn't want anything other than a card for a gift, but is determined to make it a super-special, mother-of-all date night... and I have no say in it. That's the part that bothers me. I'm not allowed to 'opt out' and she gets mad and/or her feelings hurt if I'm not all excited about spending a lovey-dovey evening together. Had a bad day at work? Too bad, old man! Go get cleaned up and meet by the front door in 15 minutes with a smile, or else. We're going out!
I don't need a manufactured day on the calendar to tell her how much I love her or to buy her flowers or take her out to a nice dinner. I do that reasonably often. I'm not a fan of holidays anyway, but Valentine's Day is the one that really gets under my skin.
