Valentines Day

I bought the fiance a silver bracelet and a stuffed animal. I gave them to her last night so she could show them off at work today. I agree that it's a stupid commercial holiday, but she loves it and would be upset if I didn't get her anything. Buying a gift is well worth seeing her happy. Tonight we are ordering some take-out and staying in.

My wife is usually pretty level-headed and practical, but there is something about Vanentine's Day that really screws her up. She really thinks there is something 'special' about this day and that it needs to be celebrated. She doesn't want anything other than a card for a gift, but is determined to make it a super-special, mother-of-all date night... and I have no say in it. That's the part that bothers me. I'm not allowed to 'opt out' and she gets mad and/or her feelings hurt if I'm not all excited about spending a lovey-dovey evening together. Had a bad day at work? Too bad, old man! Go get cleaned up and meet by the front door in 15 minutes with a smile, or else. We're going out!

I don't need a manufactured day on the calendar to tell her how much I love her or to buy her flowers or take her out to a nice dinner. I do that reasonably often. I'm not a fan of holidays anyway, but Valentine's Day is the one that really gets under my skin.

Valentines Day is a scam designed to force men to waste money on gifts, cards, flowers, etc... for their women. How can you forget by the way? You get bombarded on every media format( tv, radio, internet, mail, etc... )out there reminding you that "if you love her you will spend a butt load of money on her".

Valentines Day makes me want to

I agree with you guys. Valentines Day is a commercial event to empty your wallet. I told Tony when we were dating that I did not want gifts on "the gift giving holidays". I would rather have a gift when he saw something that he thought I would enjoy.

It is a holiday for girlfriends when things are exciting and new. Some married folks do seem to celebrate but I think they are over it.

How is valentine's day holiday fabricated anymore than Christmas or Easter in terms of commercial aspect?

Yeah why is the expectation that the man has to do something? It's not Mother's Day or Wive's/GF's day. And it's not pre-1960 where the man brings home all the bacon. It should be mutual appreciation if it's celebrated. I get that men don't necessarily want jewelry or flowers, but it's not like romantic appreciation is best expressed with a material gift.

I will admit it is a way for businesses to make money. I also enjoy the gift giving aspect though. I always look forward to my girls reaction to what I have written in her card the same as she does mine. I dont see why people have to get all bitter over it. We just enjoy giving eachother gifts. We wont get to go out to eat until Saturday because of full time work and college. Ugh

In my opinion when one person truly loves another.....you have the desire to give to them at times when they don't expect it. Nothing puts a damper on romance more than non-spontaneous behavior. Of course, I do SAY Happy Valentines Day to my lady....but we both kind of laugh at the whole thing and thinks it's a rather shallow holiday. We both enjoy when we do something special for one another simply because WE feel like it and not out of any sort of requirement.
Really is nice having a relationship with a lady like that.

You guys are pathetic! lol

I got my wife's card and gift (certificate) at the end of January! She had to salivate over it and wait for it for two weeks! When she finally did open it she made me a better man
