From our 2009 Corolla manual. 2ZRFE 1.8 L engine.

20W-50 and 15w40 API SL or SM multigrade oil.
10W-30, 5w30, 5W-20 and 0W-20 API SL, SM or ILSAC multigrade.

All rated for more than 100 deg F
20-50 to 20F
15-40 to 10F10-30 to 0 F
all the rest to below -20 F

This basically means that here in NZ take your pick on oil, but not 10W-40. Is this normal? Comments.
BTW the local dealer uses Castrol Professional 10w-30 and the Toyota NZ oil is 10W-40?

Cheers

Here in the U.S., that application uses a 0w-20 or 5w-20. Most times a 30 can be used no problem. Its just that the thinner oils that have a 20 in their name have less start up wear since oil gets to everything faster.

Indeed. In addition, the bottle will already be upside-down when you open it, so be cautious for spills.

Yeah, right! Especially down under!

I'm using 10-30 at the moment and have no issue with that at all, just amused that Toyota basically recommend anything that pours....
Seems Toyota basically spec the oil required to the target market.
The thin oil "fad" hasn't really taken off here as yet. Castrol have the EDGE range in 5-30.
BTW 10-40 is a very popular weight oil in NZ.

Yeah when I drain the old oil out it spins the correct way round. CLOCKWISE, so it must be good,, if your draining oil is spinning COUNTER-clockwise it is defective oil!.

My manual is similar, and oils here seem to be similar as in NZ and Aus. I've wondered the same about 0-5-10w40 as I'm cosidering Shell Helix HX7 and Ultra. Someone mentioned the spread, but 20w50 has the same.

For now I have Mobil Special 10w30 (dealer bulk).

Can I ask you to post the OM recommendations, and perhaps a picture of manual here:

I doubt that motor is very picky about its oil. I think a 5w30 semi-syn would work well. Plenty of good choices in the 5w30 viscosity.

zeuloa...I don't know how to post the photo but my manual looks exactly like your one but with the 5 and 0 weights added to the bottom of the chart.
I don't think 10w-40 missing is an oversight, but wouldn't know for sure.
Looks like they include enough products to allow a range of choice in differing markets.
I realise 5w30 may be the most suitable but many of us out of North America pay a large premium for those thin oils and they aren't very available.
I'm sure there are many Toyota engines around the country with big miles on them running all different grades of oil.
The manufacturer doesn't seem too fussed about it.
Cheers
