All the dirt is kept in a removable container that separates from the main unit. You can then take the container to the trash receptacle of your choice, pull a lever, and the BOTTOM of the container swings open to dump the contents. One could wrap a plastic bag around the bottom of the container before pulling the lever if so desired.

I would definitely wrap a bad around the bottom!
Please excuse my ignorance on the subject,, but where do the vacs that use water as the filter fit into the scheme of things? Have seen them used and in just a short time that was some NASTY water!!!!!

Has anyone used a Kirby?
We currently have a Kirby that my wife's grandma used for many years. They are heavy, but this one has lasted for ~ 15 years thus far. I don't know about their cleaning efficiency as I would guess middle of the road.
Remember, with 2 filters is series, the 2nd filter will always catch more stuff. This is essentially the same thing as running two vacuum cleaners over the same area. If you run a top rated Kenmore after a Dyson, the Kenmore will pick up a bunch of stuff as well.

On bagless vs bag vacs ..... think about all of the stuff that gets collected; dried bits of dog and cat turd from walking around, skin flakes, spider eggs, mites, rotten bits of food, bits of nose buggers, etc., ; do you really want to create a cloud of that stuff when emptying it, or would you prefer that it stay in bag when going into the trash ?

Went out to buy a Dyson and came home with a Wertheim 5035. What a vacuum. $1100 loghter hip pocket. Better be good!

You must be referring to the Rainbow machines. Conceptually, it's the bong, all grown up and with a legitimate job (not admitting, of course, that I really know what bongs were for...). Not sure which is ultimately "best" in any measurable sense, but the Rainbows work very, very well. The water tank does get really nasty after doing the whole house. Unlike a lot of dry machines, you never smell dust, and suction does not drop off like a paper bag machine. It does have a "final stage" replaceable filter that will need to be replaced after a couple years, but the huge bulk of stuff ends up in the water tank. We really like ours. Very nice machine.
CR doesn't think much about Dyson and neither do I.
If I was getting a new dustless vacuum system, I would go "central" and vent it outside.
We recently removed the carpet in our home and installed laminate. Hardly any dust now...

It does make a difference. We replaced half our carpet with laminate and there is a huge difference. The rooms that have carpet have considerably more dust.

We have a Miele that is the type where the unit gets pulled behind the hose (cannister type???)
VERY quiet, but great power and cleaning ability. The cat gets scared by any vacuums, including the dustbuster, but since weve gotten the miele, she just sits around not caring that the vacuum is on.
