I have a remote work job with a Boston salary. I want to move to Florida to get out of the cold, but the pay scale is less down there. If I get Starlink now then move can you tell where I’m logging in from?

Since you are moving to a different state, you will have to let your company know for tax reasons on their end, unless you are a contractor, then you may owe different state taxes.

To answer the starlink question, its unlikely your IT department will care, but they do monitor if your IP suddenly appears out of the country.

I've been using Starlink for remote work for a good 6 months now, its better then ATT fiber at my other residence.

Probably. The Starlink unit knows where it is. I've watched US streaming services on a portable Starlink unit using a US subscription while in Canada, and got local Canadian ads.
What you need is a VPN, not Starlink.
I’m on a VPN to the company right now via Comcast. I thought they could see that

Yes, IT will know the rough location. A VPN routing near Boston may work if the VPN servers are not blocked.

Is att fiber that bad in your area that satelite is better? I've only had one att fiber outage and it was for a couple hours but i've only had fiber for a few months so far. Other than that the 100 mbps is really fast compared to the 15-20 on dsl I was getting up until december 2025 which wasn't that bad. I had hughesnet before and it was awful. A small cloud would end the connection.

Is it a work computer? They'll know immediately once they see a work PC has constantly logged in from Florida, even through starlink. If it's a personal PC with a VPN like citrix, they'll still figure it out eventually.

Yes, contract. I suppose I should have used the word wages. I’m actually in Southern New Hampshire, which has a similar tax structure to Florida. But I get what you’re saying. I’m only a couple of years away from retirement and I just wanted to hang in there a little bit longer.

The pay scale is probably less because the cost of living is less. It is what you have left after expenses that counts - if you can be honest about your location and have the same net income + warm weather, it sounds like a win.

Yeah one of them is. Thanks.

Unless there is something in your contract that says you cant move locations, you are probably free/clear to do so. Its common.

For some reason, they want me up here even though I’m considered remote. I’ve only been to the office once in three years. I may have to give it up and retire.

I’m currently using Starlink from a beach rental in Fl. Yesterday it thought I was in Spokane, Wa. The day before it thought I was in Denver. I guess it’s where your link comes back to earth and connects to the internet. It does have some latency issues when streaming.

Regardless of IP location information, laptops often have GPS chips in them too, for asset tracking. If they have any type of MDM on your phone, they'll definitely get location information.

I suggest taking the honest route.

I think if you are willing to retire, I’d just chance it and move down to FL and work until they catch on. They may never catch on, or care.
yep that's what I would do. If you financially can retire, then why burden yourself living somewhere you don't want to just because you thought you wanted to put in a couple more years.

Starlink uses CGNAT, and your IP will be geolocated to a ground station that's somewhat near you. For example my friend in Alaska who uses it gets geolocated to Seattle. I mean you could set up a VPN server/router at a friend or family member's place at your current location but that's not a long term viable, reliable solution. Between Starlink and the added latency of that setup your internet experience will suck and things like Teams calls or Zoom calls or whatever will suck.

Keep in mind if you use a work computer that they sent you a computer it likely has location services enabled so regardless of where your internet appears to be they'll know. And obviously when you update your address to get your pay and tax correctly they'll know. This whole thing is not going to work for more than like a week LOL.

If you reside in Florida, you will likely have a Florida address which your Company will need to know when it sends you any official documents. If you keep your Massachusetts address, your job will deduct Massachusetts state taxes. If you file taxes with a Massachusetts address but try to claim Florida residency there may be. difficulties with the Massachusetts tax authority.

When I relocated to Florida my remote salary went down and my taxes went down, pretty much a push. My Company was aware of where I lived.

Yeah, I don’t see how you can hide from your company where you live.
Also, if you do use a VPN all I could tell you is from my wife who works remotely that her workstation logs into the company VPN I don’t see how you would get away with it honestly

Let’s put it another way, besides possible tax fraud can you afford to lose your job?

Also, who pays your health insurance and is it tied to a local network?
