Intermittent working remote

My dad mainly watches an older LG LCD TV. It works fine, but I think my parents bought it in 2015 and the remote is getting flaky. I went out and got a cheap universal remote so that they could at least change the channels and volume, but then he didn't want it when the remote started working again. So I returned it, until he told it was no longer working and I went out an bought it again.

Anyone else get a remote that's flaky? I don't think it was exposed to liquids or dropped hard enough to break it. Initially I helped him out by replacing the battery (which was showing signs of leakage) but the one light on it (under the power button) wouldn't light up when pressed. But again - some times it works, some times it doesn't.

At least this one is easy enough to program. I've seen some that are really nasty to program, especially when there's no indicator light of any kind. You're kind of left wondering if you did it the right way since it gives zero signs of success unless it just works.

Maybe you can take the remote apart and take the button pad out and inspect it. The problem could be a bad contact due to dirt ingress or wear. If the remote appears altogether dead, a battery contact may be broken where you can't see it.

Key pad is a sealed membrane. Cleaning it will accomplish nothing. About the only thing to check is the solder joints of the components and battery connections..

It wasn't on mine. It was an elastomer button pad with each button having a conductive carbon pad at the bottom. Gunk could get in and the pad could also wear out.

If batteries were leaking then batteries contacts may have corrosion on and around. Use vinegar on Q-tip to clean the contacts and compartment to begin with. There is a chance of cold solder and cracked board as well.
