Just finished reading this post and I am curious if it is alright to run left over oils from differing companies?
https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/show-pictures-of-your-oil-stash.131873/

I would assume if most/all numbers matched it would be ok but I am curious on this one?
Just say you had a quart of Mobil, 1/2 ltr of Penzoil, 2 ltrs of QS etc, would it be ok to add them together a routine oil change?

In my car, I'd run something like that for 5000 miles only

I've heard this before too.....BUT, here's where I'm confused, every so often we'll get people coming here asking it's okay to mix Tw-40 with Uw-20 to makee Vw-X

Seems people do it all the time....?

But yea, I'd say no harm....as long as the ILSAC and API specs match.

No problem. That's what's running in my car right now. Some Schaeffer's 7000, Formula Shell, and PP. All 5w30.

I have done it many, many times w/o a problem but since coming to BITOG I realize that its better to run all of the same oil inorder to maximize the additive package effectiveness. In other words if you have 2 quarts with an Infineum additive package,1 with an Oronite AP, 1 with an Afton and 1 with a Lubrizol the different AP's may cause a shortage of a particular additive. One AP may rely on Boron while another may rely on Sodium and by using both you don't have enough of either.

+1. Well stated, Pbm.

Ok, this doesn't make sense. Going back to the OP question, he wants to hypothetically mix PYB, MC5k, and QSGB....in theory, wouldn't he have a drastic shortage of whatever the AP is that is in either, say, Castrol GTX, or VWB??

My vote is to mix away and be happy.

I'm planning a mix next weekend, to get rid of some old stash. M1 5W40 SL Truck and SUV, and PYB 5W20 50/50 mix, and some Lubro-moly for the heck of it.

Thanks guy's, I don't think I will be mixing oils anytime soon in my new engine but was thinking more of my wifes car?(2002 Old Intrigue with the 3.5lt engine)

Just too many litres and 1/2 litres of oil kicking around that need to be used up.
I will be sure to use the oils that match up best with each other first, then decide, if any are left over, what to put them in?

I have a few neighbors who change their own oil. I have recently changed philosophies on my motor oil choices. Because of that I had a few random sealed quarts lying around, as well as a partial 5qt jug.

I simply asked who used what and in what weights, and got rid of all of it on a single Friday night! My neighbors were happy, I was happy, and it is just a good thing to build goodwill among neighbors. I also didn't have to agonize over putting Franken-blends in my beloved automobiles.

Just a thought! :)
