using laptop HDMI port

How do I "turn on" the HDMI port on my HP laptop? I would like to extend my display across the laptop display and an external monitor. I got a DVI (monitor) to HDMI (laptop) cable and connected it, but nothing, the monitor sees no signal. When I look at the Win 7 DISPLAY options it only says "connected via VGA" port as an option. No "connected via HDMI port".

Other times I might want to watch a movie stored on my laptop on my HDTV TV.

When I hook up my HDMI on my Lenovo it just duplicate's the display. I can turn off either via a hot key but most of the time just mirror the display.

What is the model number? With that google it plus HDMI and I bet you find an answer..

I have the same problem with my Dell laptop. Have even had our IT guy at work look at it and no solution. I have another older laptop where this feature works fine. I'm very interested in a solution also.

That's odd. When I connect our TV to my Lenovo laptop, or my Brother/Sisters HP G62 laptop, it automatically detects it. I can then select if I want it duplicated, extended, or all of that fun stuff. CAn't imagine why it doesn't work.

Can you try a different cable? Maybe the one you're using is defective?

I tried a VGA cable and that produced a display with some bars of flicker.

Try a KNOWN working HDMI cable. Also make sure that the Monitor/TV is setup to look at the HDMI port.

I have to look at that port for it to work. Some TVs just look at all ports and ask you which one would like to use.

Boot order may be important. You might have to turn on the TV with it all connected then boot the computer, before the TV gives up on the "no signal" and goes into a default.

Some TVs have a 'dedicated' HDMI port for just connecting laptops.
My samsung LCD TV has one of these...(it's labeled 'HDMI -2: PC' or something like that...

You might wanna check and see if your TV also has a specific HDMI port for laptops.

I tried a normal HDMI cable to my HDTV and it worked. Went back to the cable to my monitor, re-seated both ends and it worked.

I have my acer laptop connected via HDMI to a Vizio flatscreen. In order for it to work properly I have to select the input on the TV and then boot the computer - otherwise it will use the laptop screen. One thing I haven't been able to fix is when the computer is running and using the TV display, if I close the lid it always changes the resolution on the TV to what the laptop display is even though I have the laptop set to "do nothing" when the lid is closed. Solution: leave the lid open.

the 'do nothing' part is probably for power management criteria only - like sleep, turn off, when you close the lid, etc.
I doubt that 'do nothing' part applies to anything else that's affected by closing the lid...resolution, etc..

I am also troubled by this problem on my MSI brand. One thing that I did find out is that you are suppose to start up with the cable connected to the HDMI on the TV beforehand. The problem for me is that I don't have any TV's now that have HDMI ports, and I can only test this when I stay at a hotel. Funny but true.
