Using ATF to clean out engine

I heard this has been done before but not sure it is actually a proven method. Is it true that ATF has a lot of cleaning additive and is safe for use in engine as a quick cleaning lube?

Not a good idea... This is an old fix, not a new one... I would use ARX instead.

This is like the old rumor that pennzoil would sludge up any engine. It just isn't true. The only effective way to truely clean a engine is to use something like Auto-RX. ATF actually has less cleaning ability when compared to a motor oil.

Cool. I am glad you guys cleared up this myth for me because I keep hearing out it elsewhere.

It was probably true at one time maybe back in the 70's when oil quality was really bad, but today, you would be better off with a quart of HQ synthetic than tranny fluid. Use ARX, it's great stuff!

If you buy your car brand new, and you follow the manufacturer recommendation. Most likely you will not need to use anything to clean your engine.

My dad's caravan engine says otherwise and is currently on an ARX treatment... I don't think that's true. Just my opinion though.

That's why I said "most likely ". I have yet to use any additive to clean my engine and probably will not.

No I know, and that's why I said "Just my opinion" I didn't believe that an additive was needed either, until I seen what it did for my dads engine. So he's on dose #2. The engine was always regularly maintained prior.
