I've used an old air filter before (made in 1998 in 2009) but I just purchased an old Purolator Premium Plus L20195 at a thrift store that has a copyright on it of 1997. It's in the older white box, before Bosch and Hummel/Mann acquired them. I'm guessing it's at least 10 years old, but it looks perfectly fine. I don't see any rust by looking at it. No dents or scratches, think it's safe to use? I haven't used an oil filter that was more than 5 years old.

I paid too much for it, $3. I just wanted the old style box mainly to put on my shelf, the filter was a bonus.

The gasket seems fine from what I can see. Not so sure about the ADBV however.

The filter should be fine. I have quite a stash of oil filters. What I do is take plastic sandwich wrap, and put it over the base of the filter and secure it with a rubber band. This way the base plate doesn't rust, and it won't get damp inside the filter. Oil filters can stay for a very long time.

Call the manufacturer and see what their advice is. I would think that potentially the paper element could have become brittle depending on the storage conditions. Is it worth chancing it for $3?

most papers are manufactured with acids , those acids will cause a break down of the paper years latter , more than 10 years old I'd pitch it
