Have any of you tried using an oil extractor on this engine? Were you able to get all of it out?

The reason I ask is that on my 530i I can get all of it out, but I recently tried to extract oil the same way on my g/f's '01 Jetta and I have a feeling that not all of it came out since I was only able to put in 4 quarts of fresh oil afterwards and the dipstick was already at full. If I'm not mistaken, that engine takes 4.5 quarts (with filter change), so that would mean that there was still 0.5 quarts of old oil left that I was not able to extract.

What's your experience? Does this engine's oil pan have some weird shape that prevents complete extraction?

FYI, the extractor is a MityVac, but I don't think that matters in this case.

I don't remember if the oil pan has a strange shape, but the last VW 2.0 that I changed oil on (an 03 Jetta) took 4.25 quarts to reach the top of the stick.

I wouldnt waste my money. My wifes 97 2.slow oil is always clean after i drain and fill....sometimes i have to look at it in the light to get a reading on the dipstick.

BMW and MB dipstick tubes are designed to vacuum oil, dipstick tube ends at the bottom of the oil pan. Insert vacuum tub into dipstick tub, when you can not push it down anymore that is the bottom of the oil pan.

It is not the same for other cars, I could not feel when the vacuum is at the bottom of the oil pan for '94 LS400 or '04 S2000. I had to try several times to vacuum most oil, but not all oil out.

So not all of it then?

Can you confirm the total capacity? Is it 4.25 qt as Critic stated? I found info on other sites (including Amsoil's) that it's 4.5 qt.

there is no strange shape about the oil pan that prevents full extraction on the 4-banger oil pans. You can move the tube around to get every nook & cranny.

I had no issues with my old TDI with an oil extractor.

my current passat, I have a fumoto valve installed
