i have an 04 dakota with the 3.7, i just changed the oil using maxlife and a fram tough guard, i swore i'd never use a fram filter that was'nt an extra guard but i got a good deal on it as a package deal at autozone, now my engine is noisier then it use to be (before this lof) and i have a performax po-21 (made by purolator) that looking at the specs is the same only shorter, so i'm thinking about just swapping filters. i'm also concerned because i was looking at a graph of flow rates on a post on this site and the tough guard had the worst flow rates. anyone think swapping filters for the po-21 would be a bad idea?

i dont think it would be a bad idea at all. ive used numerous pf47 equilivent filters on my neighbors tahoe (with her permission) which calls for the longer pf52

If you are changing filter and oil regularly, the filter should be largely along for the ride, and a smaller one shouldn't worry you.

Holden deliberately installed a small filter on their 6 cyls in the 80s to reduce valve clatter in the morning while the lifters filled.

ya..i know, i was just on a budget and had a store credit so i only spent $8 out of my pocket, i figured what could it hurt, with millions of these things sold every year what are the chances i'll have a problem, and the other filter i have isn't much smaller, maybe 1/2" shorter.i'm thinking with an improved flow rate it should actually work better then the fram. also i always change my oil between 2 and 3k.

I actually tossed a smaller filter on my focus when I bought it, Wal-Mart didnt carry the one it called for, so I got a ST for the 2005 model that was half the size but had the same valve specs and thread size. I do not think it will matter too much. I plan on swapping it out with the full size motor craft one soon that wal-mart had in stock now. Just use the filters and dont look back.

Swap it, don't worry, finish out your OCI, look for house brand
filters made by Purolator ow Wix- usually great values there. EX: A Southern chain store, Fred's Discount, carries Texaco-branded oil filters for $2.99 reg price, I used to get 'em on sale for $1.50, now they seldom go on sale at all & stock seems to be dwindling. But they're made by Purolator & seem identical to the Pur Prem, now called the Pur Classic I think. Lots of Champion-mfg house brand fiters too, also good. ABF!

update, swapped the filter and noise is gone (also topped off with a bit of 0w20 honda oil i had sitting around),lousy fram filters!!!

I have a bridge for sale, want to buy it?

put fram filter on (only time i've used one on this truck, use only wix) instantly got lifter noise that was continuous, took fram off lifter noise gone. can't say there is much room for interpretation.
