My 20HP B&S twin has a recommendation of 5w30 & 10w30, as the preferred viscosities.. I would think a 0w40 would be OK but, maybe not the best option. Ed
I've used M1 0W-40 in a GCV160 Honda for four years, oil is just now starting to get enough color that I can see it on the stick... That's right, I'm yet to change it and none added, keep saying maybe next time I cut...
I can't see why not? Its viscosity would be about the same as 5w and 10w at start up, if not somewhat thinner. And at 40 weight at 212 degrees F, it still going to be thinner then it was at start up. There a lot of people on here that uses 40 weight oil in there OPE and have no problems doing it.
Water when cold? Good stuff. But those 0w40 are actually a 30 when at 100C+ after a couple of hours of use ...
Too much VIIs for the wide gap, even when there's some PAO's in it ...
Been running 5w-40 Mobil 1 TDT is my 26hp B&S on my Scag zero turn for the past 7 years. Change it once a year, and it barely changes color during that run.

That's what I keep hearing and have seen 276* on a flathead Briggs at the valve cover near exhaust(oil is in contact with this area)... Never saw more than 230* anywhere on front of block or lower sump area...
I checked the Honda a couple weeks ago, max anywhere on block or sump was under 210*... Note this was on a especially hard workout, was cutting grass that would cause a stall unless taken at approx half speed of normal cutting...
