using 0w40 in stuff that doesn't need it?

I have in the past. Found it on clearance. My car specs 5w20. Didn't seem to affect my car either way I terms of things my 5 senses could pick up on.

As far as I've seen, no one here on BITOG has ever shown that running 0W-40 in any car has caused viscosity-related problems, ever. No matter what grade is specified for the engine.

Seems like in Europe they often spec heavier oil for the same engines used in US. I would say no problem.

I won't use it in my "new" 0w20 application while under warranty.
They tell you not to use 5w20 unless it's an emergency. The dealership gets bent over it.............. oh well

I just bought several jugs of Castrol 0W40 on sale..($25 for 5 liters) its my new oil and going in soon...Not for the Cavalier, that gets PYB

M1 0w-40 makes my 318 run quieter and smoother than any other oil I've tried.

I told a friend this and he was like, "no way would I use a 0 weight oil it's too thin!!! I'll stick with 5w30."

When I Showed him that the 0w-40 was thicker at 100C and nearly the same thickness at 0 degrees C, his mind was blown, and he likely still can't grasp that W means winter, not weight.

But most of the population can't.

Yes I'm hoping the extra HTHSV will improve my lead. I'm starting to think that the oem radiator isn't cooling like it's supposed to especially since it's so thin to begin with its got no reserve capacity I'm guessing.

I will be soon.

In the F150 (specified 5w20), I'm planning a test. 0w40, 5w30 and 0/5w20 will all be run to 10k using Amsoil SS. I'll use the same brand filter each OCI.

MPG will be tracked for the entire OCI, and UOAs will be performed. Once complete I'll be posting the results.

Should be interesting.

There are SO many variables in real world fuel economy testing that it is just about impossible to do. Seriously. You can try as hard as you want but there are just too many variables and too many things that you cannot control. It is hard to even repeat fuel economy testing on the EPA test on emission rolls inside a building where there is no wind and the temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, etc. is all controlled. For the kind of difference you would be looking for it is pointless to even consider real world fuel economy testing. You just cannot find it.

I wonder how much if that is based on climate and how much is based on a much smaller selection of oil products in the former "Worker's Paradise". My 08 V6 Camry manual says 5W 30 and that's it, though they do mention 0W 20 for the 4 banger.

My Beretta doesn't spec a 20, but a 5w30, and likes the castrol 0w40 just fine. Leaks as it always did, runs the same, mpg the same etc.

I say test the mpg. I've noticed a diference in fuel consumption between Xw40 and Xw30("low HTHS" ones) in my car that specs 0w20 to 15w40.
