Send me whatever you like and I'll happily use it...

It's my BIL's car. He doesn't care what it gets, and neither do I, as long as it is capable of a 5k/1yr OCI - something that this filter should have handled easily.

I agree rooflessvw. This filter should have been just fine with that amount of miles... Not like you put some hooptified name filter on the car...

Yep. Wix is known for evenly spaced filter media.

I don't think these are the same WIX filters you get for American cars. Even the 2012 Jetta takes American made wix. This one looks like the one that's specd for my 17 Jetta.

Thanks Roofless definitely won't be running them on the 17 Jetta.

Looks like you would be better off using a "basic" Purolator, since that is one of the smaller sizes and I posted some photos of a almost perfect Purolator in regards to pleats.
Just throwing that out there, not trying to be a smart a__ and thank you for the post.

This comment should make a Fram haters heads explode... The basic Tearolator has the same design flaw as that Wix. Paper media glued to a rigid metal end cap. When the paper media gets wet or loaded over time it can rip under acceleration or increased oil pressure. And it's always the same place. Right at the stiff metal end cap. A Fram paper end cap filter won't do that because it flexes. ...®

That pleat spacing would be a total fail on any filter, including a synthetic blend one, not sure if wire backed would handle that or not. Hope that's not a sign of the "Tear-O-Latorization" of Wix!

The last Ultra I cut open had worse pleat spacing and it didn't tear, even without a filter bypass.

And why not even one that's truly rated for the vehicle? The 57830 "fits", but obviously is bottom dollar quality, has a 22# bypass, and has a nominal micron rating of 35.

The Wix/NG (5)7055 filter, which is properly spec'd for the Subaru engine, has the correct 27# bypass, and a nominal micron rating of 15. Considering you can get the NG 7055 on sale for less than $4 each, methinks your BIL better re-evaluate his spendthrift ways. Gonna cost him big time in the long run.

I bought the filter, and I used oil from my stash.

I was at O'Reilly and said, "I need a filter for a '15 FR-S."

It wasn't "cheap," or bought to save money. It was bought because I was at O'Reilly and it was what they had.

Thanks for your advice and condescension.

O'Reilly's sold an old discontinued filter, combined with poor workmanship, wide pleats from the factory who made it. Either the workers are inept, ignorant, lazy, or don't care what the machines are doing, or all of those. Fibers in resin do deteriorate with age. Compare to the Polish Hengst displayed today.

While the filter was discontinued by WIX, I can not find any evidence they issued a recall. I suspect there are good reasons for discontinuing the filter.

I have had great results with 51372 for different applications.

It is rare to see a torn WIX filter.

Regardless of operating conditions, the bypass should open before the media tears.

Roofless, it wasn't condescension; if it was given to you by a parts-store employee, it is obviously just them following what their computer spit out. That line of Wix appears to be a substandard offering, and it's good it was discontinued. It's partly the reason I do all of my own research on filters prior to purchase, and I tell them exactly what filter I want instead of what their computer says.

My apologies if you felt it was a personal attack; I made the assumption everyone here checked the manufacturer's website for filter applications. Mea culpa...

It's fine. It has been both a wonderful and rough holiday season.

For my own cars I absolutely do research the parts I install.

For the oil changes I do for family & friends, I install what they bring me, use the oil I have on hand and a cheapo filter, or a parts-store oil & filter combo.

Like I said, I used an STP blue can this time around and clearance STP HM 10w30. He's just happy he doesn't have to pay, and I'm happy to help and thin my stash.
