Used CR-V? RAV4? Equinox?

Dad just told me something that I didn't see coming...

He's getting tired of the Park Avenue, and wants a crossover. He and Mom are getting older, and they're getting tired of "falling" into the Park Avenue, then having to climb out of it.

They're wanting something that sits higher off of the ground, yet they want something that is still rather economical on fuel.

They have friends with a newer RAV4. I think that is where some of this is coming from.

It won't be used to tow anything, as they have the Sierra for that.

And it will have to be used. Dad doesn't buy new. The problem is, new may actually be a better buy in this segment.

So, my initial reaction is either a CR-V, a RAV4, or an Equinox. He's a lifetime GM man, and has never owned a "foreign" make, although I don't see that as a huge problem.

But no Fords. You know where would freeze over first.

The biggest issue is that the nearest Toyota dealer is as lousy as it gets. I honestly don't know how they stay in business with the way they treat people. So that puts a RAV4 behind right away.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the CR-V.

The Equinox with its V6, is going to take a hit with gas mileage... although the 2010 has the 2.4 Ecotec. But, that's too new and too much $$$.

Price wise, it will need to stay in the middle teens, as much as possible.

The Honda CR-V would get my vote. Additionally, have you thought of considering a Honda Element? They are just as easy to enter and are cavernous inside!

If he is a GM man then I would go with the Equinox. If he is open for Foreign go for a Santa Fe. Priced liked a GM reliable like a Lexus IMO!

Not for the old folks... You're talking about a very traditional couple in their early 70's here... not me.

If there was a CR-V and an Element parked side by side, I can assure you that Dad would be looking at the CR-V.

I know that you're the resident Santa Fe guy. I'll have to do a little research there.

But wouldn't the Tuscon be more comparable to the CR-V and the RAV4?

Yes it would but the Santa Fe is so cheap at the moment I would get that instead. They are good on gas a little more roomy and the right height you want.

I think it would fit the "older" generation better.

The new Tuscon is very nice too.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat about these models... I'm a bit of a Hyundai nut for sure.

I'd agree with stevie on this one...I do like the old nox, but the santa fe just works here...

Yep. So does their 3.8 liter Park Avenue...

Pretty bad when you're looking at trading up 6 years, and the same problem still exists, on a different engine and a different style of vehicle.

Oh well...

I thought the 3400's got revised gaskets very late in life that corrected their bad leaking habits. The Series III 3800's from 2005-2008 did.

He's too cheap to go with a 2010 right now...

But give it another 4 years, and it would be a simple decision.

I've researched this a bit more...

Dad says that he's getting 22-23mpg in real world mixed driving with the Park Avenue. So, there's my benchmark.

Compared to mixed driving figures from the EPA:

CR-V - 23
RAV4 - 23 (4cyl) - 22 (6cyl)
Equinox - 20
Santa Fe - 21 (small 6) - 19 (big 6)

The Nox and the Santa Fe with the big 6, is a bit more of a hit than I'd like to see, but it isn't a total deal breaker.

What other vehicles are escaping attention here?

(and please don't mention an Escape... that wasn't intentional)

No. Totally different gaskets and intake in 05. In addition to having a pressurized overflow system.
My Equinox has been rock solid. I just wen't over 70,000 miles. I have done brakes and tires.

The only vehicle in this class that has decent roof-crush resistance is the Subaru Forester.
In the event of a rollover, the Forester might let the driver walk away.
The others, probably not.
Aside from that, we have found the Forester to be a pleasant vehicle, and it is awesome in the snow.

They've been making Saturn VUEs since 02, lots of choices in FWD/AWD/4/6 cyl, but maddeningly expensive used for what you get.

VUE platform birthed equinox.
