Now she's looking at a 98 Camry 2.2 with 64k miles, asking $6k. Obviously there would be haggling to be done. I realize these years are sludge prone but I figure if I can get it in writing that its free of sludge now and she runs synthetic at maybe 5k intervals, it should be fine.

There are lots of cars out there, buying a car is (for most people) not a trivial purchase.

I realize this but remember this is not me buying the car. I suggested the Metro because she really only needs a basic commuter car but from her preferences she seems to want a midsize with some more creature comforts. I'm really only in the picture to try and help prevent her from buying a lemon.

Way over priced and with ONLY 64k? With the sludge engine (though most of the sludge is caused by poor maintenance IMO) and 13 year old car more like $2-3k max.

Unless they tear it apart ALL THE WAY their putting in writing means nothing.

Really, how about a 2000-2006 Taurus or same years Malibu? Get either well below $5 with around 80-100k miles.

Bill

Like I said its dealer asking price and they're pretty comparable to similar cars at dealers in the area.

Their putting it in writing and her keeping meticulous oil records will keep the warranty valid.

12-year old Camry for $6k?

You're really not doing her any favours not steering her away from these rip-offs.....

The few people I know who got older low mileage cars [down here in the jungle] like that had nothing but nightmare experiences with them....The first thing that went was the a/c,starter and windows....After that they start to burn oil and they end up rebuilding everything on the low mileage car.

BTW the Honda dealer [Coral Springs Honda] quoted my neighbor 800 bucks to change her timing belt on her 00 Honda Accord V6...BTW the V6 Accord [her 00 Accord anyway] is worse on fuel then a full size V8.

Our 2003 V6 Accord isn't the greatest around town, either. 17-18 for around town driving. Highway road trips it usually manages mid 30s, as high as 37 on three tanks back to back for me.

True, but when you start at twice or three times too much for a vehicle then that is a place that I would NOT ever buy a vehicle from.

Sorta like the TV commercial that says "But wait there's more!" Then they double the offer for the same price.

Years ago my father had a Chevy 3/4 to pickup he put it up for sale for $3500 firm (an honest price for the condition, at that time)
A woman came to see it, she wanted something to pull a horse trailer. She liked it, but wanted her brother to see it. The brother liked it so she wanted her mechanic to look at it. the mechanic said it was O.k., but she wanted to take it to another mechanic to have it checked out.
By this time my father was fed up and traded it in on a new truck (which he wanted anyway, he just wanted to just deal in cash)
A week later we see the truck with the woman that kept looking at it. It turns out she bought it from the dealer for $6500!
But she said she felt better that it came from the dealer who could "check it out" for her.

I have this vehicle, wife bought it new in delaware,
we still have in the family, her dad drives it now, 200k miles.
slow to shift to 1st is the only issue with it.
$7k is too much, I would offer trade in minus 1k, no takie then walkie.
great power von zee v6.
get an ol corolla instead, good luck
