Getting close to the first oil change for me, about 55,000 miles so far. I see Valvoline Synpower has been superseded by Modern Engine, I had run Synpower in my Traverse and wife's Equinox. Oil consumption seems to be non-existent or very low although it has VCM; it was a little overfilled by the dealership and it's still over the full mark. So, go with Valvoline Modern Engine 0w-20 for the Pilot and 5w30 for the Equinox?

Valvoline Advanced Synthetic is also available at a better price point. It is the formerly named Synpower.

If you like Valvoline, use their MST 5w30 for both. Napa has it on sale for $5.49/qt.

In the GM world we have AFM which is similar to your VCM. With all the same problems. Gunking up the valves and cylinders with blowby, lifters eating up cam lobes, oil consumption. The GM answer is delete or disable it, which makes the engine problems go away. You appear to have some cheap "muzzler" options for the Pilot. Looks like your VCM engages based on temp. So people have created a connector that "muzzles" the temp sensor reading in that section of the harness. So The VCM engages less, or in most cases not at all. Which is a whole lot easier than the options in the GM world. You should check them out. One example..

I just use whatever 0w20 syn is on sale at Wally World in my 2013.

Definitely put a Muzzler on that bad boy.

I'm afraid I don't know what "MST" is supposed to stand for.

It stands for "Mid Saps Technology"

The MST is a dexos2 oil. Primarily intended for diesel engines, Euro-market cars, and the C7 Corvette, but it can be used on all dexos-spec'd GM cars. It is also a little thicker than dexos1/GF5 5w30.
