I'll bet it would work great. I had a 70 Beetle back in high school and I used a 40 weight mono grade. It ran well but I had to rebuild the top end a couple of times.
Since you need to change the oil so frequently on those due to the lack of oil filter, I would buy all I could afford while it's on sale.
