Use Mercon V in 1999 Grand Am automatic

I have a case of Mercon V, and I have a 1999 Grand AM with the auto transmission. Can I use this fluid in the transmission? I am thinking it has to be a better quality fluid than the Dexron III in there now.

Valvoline and most other mercon V's say they are compatible with dex III. The only one that I've seen that doesn't say that is Castrol. What brand is it?

Or I think that's it. My bottles do not mention Dexron III as the PDF files says. The bottle says "for use in equipment requireing Mercon V or Allison C4 quality, as well as in older GM and Ford Vehicles" It doesn't say what "older" means

I am guessing this is more like one of the "Multi-Vehicle ATF's" than a pure Mercon V.

I actually called them and they said it meets DEXRON III, but theu just can't say that anymore
