US made ACs

I live in an old home that doesn't have central air. In fact I hate central air and believe it is the cause of the proliferation of many respiratory ailments.

Anyway, I do like AC. And I like to be able to control what spaces get cooled. Our living room has an in wall AC that cools really well but is very loud. I've been looking at high efficiency replacements.

I bought a Freidrich window unit a few years back because it was us made. It is a good unit, quiet and cools well.

Started looking into their Kuhl line of quiet, commercial grade ACs. Looks like the production is no longer USA, but Mexico. I'm not paying my hard earned money to give a job to a Mexican, I want a US made AC.

Looking for leads on this. Recommendations? Looking for an in-wall unit, 17-24k BTU.

Wouldn't mind a 5-6000 BTU window unit as well. Must be US made. If they are not available, I may just go split ductless once and for all; giving some Japanese jobs by buying a Mitsubishi Mr Slim system. It pains me but is better than buying offshored Mexican products from a company that used to produce here - at least I'll have an even quieter, highly modular system.

The Asian Mitsu and Toshiba ones seem like nice units, But who knows were they are actually made? China?

We have a Carrier split system, it's one of those "puron" systems, works well- for most of the house. My bedroom is the exception. I have two computers that run 24/7 (main desktop, and fileserver) and something to do with the design of the house, this bedroom is always extremely hot, even in the middle of winter. So the computers just contribute to the heat. Last year I finally broke down and picked up a Arctic King 5000 BTU window unit, made in China. It was probably 2/3 years old when I bought it, and it get's heavy use. But it's awesome, works excellent. I think it uses a Mitsubishi compressor.

The mitsu one is efficient and reliable. Depending on which one, they're kind of noisy but nonetheless good units.

See if you can find a source for Einhell. Not made in USA unfortunately, but Germany is a nice close 2nd.

Are the LG units made in Korea, or China, or somewhere in Indonesia??

Between Korean and Japanese AC I'd pick Japanese (Mitsubishi in particular), they seems to be the top choice for almost everywhere in Asia, especially where it is hot and humid almost year round.

Most of the compressor are made in Korea. For commercial usage proper cleaning is probably the most important thing for longevity in repair cost. Moisture builds up and holds in an unclean environment causing corrosion and leaks. Got to realise also commercial usage hours are not like home usage.

A lot has to do with design and workmanship(quality). Mitsubishi are highly rated in the commercial field.

I don't thing you are going to find all parts made in the US kind of thing. Assembly in the US?

This is disappointing, especially on Memorial Day weekend. Our warfighters have fought and died to protect our way of life and economic superiority, and now we can't even get a US made AC??!?

In the 80's-90's Freidrich was just as well as Mitsubishi ... with proper maintenance was the key. The compressor is the life of the AC ... Global economics well being is the key, the work force for any country will always drive a country. We've become too spoiled for our own good, things becomes too easy. Maybe there are things today to change that path...look at GM, Ford and the Auto industry on the brink of an end.

I find it pretty disrespectful to veterans to say they died for economic superiority.

I think that is an integral part of our way of life and our ability to excercise our freedoms and activities to our liking. I'm not arguing that point with you.

But as I actively am employed by and work to support our warfighters, and much of the mission we work for is protecting the shipping lanes for commerce, it obviously is related.

My mainpoint was that on a patriotic-type weekend, it is sad to not even be able to buy stuff made by my fellow countrymen. Sad and disgusting to me.

My circa 1994 York split system has a Bristol compressor, made in Bristol, VA.

As far as I know they still make them there.

I'd go with York, but those systems are huge. I'm looking for <<3 ton ductless mini split. I laws have to use this kind of system due to house construction, they use the Mitsubishi Mr Slim. Would be great it York, carrier, etc had a US made variant.

My York is a 2-ton unit. They actually have 1.5 ton units as well. They don't seem to make mini-split systems anymore.

I think you might be demanding too much if you want the brand, the components to all be made in US and for exactly the size and type you want. US export a lot of components as well as technology know how into foreign brand sold and made in foreign nations, and US import a lot of components and technology know how in our US assembled and branded items. IMO that's very fair.

The biggest market for mini-split is in Asia so they are most likely made or major component sourced there. You just cannot expect a manufacture to ship major components across the ocean rather than building it near their major market.
