Urgent Help Needed! CV Halfshaft Fell Out

Hey guys,

Really stuck and need some help.

I put two halfshafts onto a 92 Camry 4cyl last night and when I came back this morning, on the driver side halfshaft, the entire shaft fell out, which left the inner joint inside of the transmission.

We have tried prying the inner joint out of the transmission but it isn't coming out, possibly because there is no longer the weight of the shaft present to force the inner joint out.

Any trips would be greatly appreciated.

Why did the shaft pull apart, can you just slip it back together and tighten the clamp???
If you are trying to pry you are creating a wedge effect. with the new circlip it will be tough to get out. Try pressing down from the top to keep the joint level with a bar or 2x4 and then with a pry bar from the bottom try to pop it out, you are probably just fighting yourself.

A pic would be helpful cant picture this in my head.I agree prying is just having a wedge effect,maybe you can fabricate something to get behind it and pull straight with a slide hammer or similar tool.

take the other shaft out and see with a flashlight if you can punch it out with a long punch.

Figured it out. Had to pry at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions at the same time, hard, and it finally came out.

Are you putting this one back together? What grease are you using?

i would take it back and make use of the lifetime warranty that every reman or new axle seems to come with nowadays.

Half shafts don't just fall apart for no reason.Did you test drive it last night? Maybe it got pulled apart during installation and the boot was all that was holding it together.
Otherwise make sure you got the correct one for the drivers side for your Camry. It sounds like this one was too short. Also check your motor/trans mounts to be sure the engine isnt moving so much it pulled the shaft apart.

grease in there?!? long lasting CVs use oil. Hope those rebuilds didnt grind into the case hardening, else they wont last long...

I usually use Redline CV2 or valvoline Moly synthetic for CV joints.Maybe i missed something but i have never seen oil in one.

I haven't seen one filled with oil either. Always moly grease.

I took it back and got another unit under the lifetime replacement policy. You should've seen the look on the assistant manager's face.

They were not together right when they were assembled on to the car.
They were pulled apart beyond where they should be , at some point.

But there is a possibility that they are the wrong ones, too.

A new circlip can be tough . Two large screwdrivers or prybars with a sharp hard pop [at 180 deg apart] will get it out.
Watch for spills.

We stopped buying Cardone rebuilt stuff.The failure rate is unbelievable.I dont know what brand you got but rebuilt parts in general seem to be of much lower in quality than years ago.

A majority of CV axles are remaned by Cardone or made in China.

And I'm guessing someone on the assembly line forgot the internal axle circlip...

I agree.. some cardone axles are good, some aren't.
the china stuff really isn't so bad, I'd hate to see a rebuilt china part.. but the new stuff is worth taking a chance on.
