I've got smoke coming out of my ears right now i'm so angry.. so i'm gonna vent.

On Thursday, August 17th I began a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with Newegg.com for a GPS unit i had bought from them, worth $500.

Later that day, i shipped out the gps unit from a UPS store, via ground in MA.

I call newegg on Friday of the next week to see the status of my RMA, they told me they hadn't recieved the package. Long story short, the package was delivered on WED, but not to Newegg. It was delivered to a Car repair shop in California, near Newegg.

So i guess what happens is, UPS tries to locate the package for 8 days. Those 8 days have passed, and they didnt find anything. Not suprising, it's a $500 GPS unit shipped to Joe's auto garage, you think they're gonna give it back?

The problem is, I haven't been dealing with UPS, i can't. The ups store is considered the shipper, so they've been dealing with UPS and i've been in the dark on everything. Well, the guy who was dealing with UPS just went on a 2 week vacation, and the 8 day trace just ended yesterday or Wed.

So i called and spoke to another woman there, and she said they got the paperwork from UPS to set up a claim. She thinks that since i only put $100 of insurance on the package, all i will get back is $100. **.

Had the package been damaged in shipment, or lost, i would understand getting $100 back. But I feel like this is very unfair. UPS screwed up big time by delivering the package to the wrong location. I should get $500 from them. For those who aren't familiar with Newegg, it is a major, major retailer. How do you mistake a car repair shop with Newegg?

Any help, ideas, etc would be appreciated. All this is new to me and its got me..

Sadly, it's pretty simple. You'll get a refund sooner or later for the insured amount and the cost of shipping. If you bought it with a credit card you *might* have some coverage that way also to make up the difference

The lesson here is hard but simple. Never, ever ship anything you can't stand to lose by UPS or the US postal Service without full value insurance. Fed Ex is better by far but again, if you can't afford to lose the $$ don't ship without full insurance...

Nope. He agreed to their terms by giving them the package. Their terms are they're responsable for the insured amount, no more, and no other damages. He's SOL unless UPS can somehow get it back from the auto shop. Good luck on that...

Ouch. Sad but true what's been said already. UPS insures packages due to loss/damage up to $100 built in the cost of shipping. Anything more and you pick up the tab for their negligence.

You should try to find out the name of the person that signed for that package, then contact the manager and or owner of the garage and go from there. You may need the help of New Egg to get this info from UPS but I would try calling UPS directly with the tracking numer and asking them who signed.

I have the name of the person who signed for the package, but i forgot the name of the shop. UPS told me it a few weeks back, but i forgot it. I'll call again sometime and get it. I've never liked UPS, and this is the last straw. Fedex or USPS from now on.

I didn't get additional insurance because it was quite expensive, the gps was packaged very, very well.. and I had never imagined that they would deliver to the wrong address, since Newegg probably gets a billion packages a day, i thought they would have no problem getting it to them.

You also may be running into an issue with NewEgg. If they have a time limit on their RMA's (15 days, 30 days, etc)-if it arrives after that it may be refused or not recognized.

Keep pushing. Push HARD. Be firm.

We shipped out a $900 antique item on eBay a few years back thru the local Mail Boxes Etc. We paid for insurance for the full amount and kept all receipts. However, his clerk did NOT insure it with UPS. You guessed it, it was BROKEN.

After a week of dealing with the store manager, we figured out that his clerk did NOT insure the package properly, thus UPS refused to pay out the proper amount on the insurance claim. And he refused to pay me. We phoned corporate, but they were of no use at all.

He "settled" with me for $800. Yeah, we still made money on that antique, but it took MANY phone calls and lots of frustrated days just THINKING about the whole thing.

Keep pushing and don't let up. The squeaky wheel gets the grease (or oil, this is BITOG after all

). It's frustrating as a summer day is hot, but hang in there, you'll get your money in the end.

Good luck.

I called newegg 1-2 weeks ago to extend the RMA, it now ends on the 17th of this month. Although, i really think the GPS unit itself is gone forever, but no harm done in extending the RMA.

Thats one of the reasons i'm so mad ToyotaNSaturn, the UPS store is the one handling the claim. I'm sure they'd like to see me get my money, but they're not gonna fight nearly as hard as i would. I'll talk directly to the man handling the claim next week, so hopefully he can clue me in on whats going to happen.

I can understand why UPS would only owe me $100, but.. I still cant get over the fact that im getting hosed for $400 because of them. UPS is a major company, $500 to them is nothing. $500 to a 22 year old college student like me is a lot.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Do you have the tracking #? You can research it yourself at UPS.com and find out who signed for it. Or, you can PM me with it and I will research it on Monday for you as I have access to the UPS system.

Keeping a package that is shipped to you by mistake is a crime.

Find the name of whoever signed for the package, then call the police. That person is in possession of stolen property.

^ Taking that further, if it can be proven the driver was in cahoots, he was transporting stolen property or somesuch. Great idea. Who knows, maybe his brother works at this mechanic shop and he "accidentally" drops off expensive stuff.

You might have to write a polite certified letter to the car repair shop so they're "on notice" the thing was stolen/misappropriated first. Offer to pay return shipping or that they could give it back to UPS.

We have had a rash of thefts somewhere in the UPS chain.
We lost a number of new Blackberry devices (new and very expensive) that arrived with empty boxes that had been re-taped.
They are investigating, but I doubt I'll ever hear what they find.

If the situation is documented I hope NewEgg will work with you. I've had dealings with them before and I've thought they’ve been pretty fair; although it is quite a pain in the *s* to pursue these situations. As far as insurance, I always insure something I'm shipping for what I think its worth. If I insured an item for $100.00 then I would not expect one cent more.

The price paid by UPS is base price. If the package is worth something you can risk it (usually works perfectly) or pay the small fee for insurance. You risked it and have to pay.

atleast your going to get $100 back. i sent out some very expensive boxes to canada through fedex last february. fedex lost the boxes and their international claims division sucks. its been this long and ive yet to see a dime. i dont think i ever will. ive sent the requested dicuments over and over. i keep getting the run around.

and the worst part is i still use fedex. their rock bottom shipping costs have made up for my loss already.

I ordered several hundred dollars worth of electronics from Crutchfield one time. I hadn't received the package so I started tracking it online. Yep. Status "Delivered". What? Where? To Whom? Because it definitely wasn't to my house. I called UPS and then I called Crutchfield. All they needed was a claim number to re-send the merchandise.

The very next morning, I tripped over the box. UPS delievered it to the wrong house and luckily I had honest neighbors. I cancelled the claim and Crutchfield cancelled the replacement.

Like I said, you can track it on line and if there was a signature, the name will be listed (provided that the guy used a real name) online.
