Update: Mobil 1 Group III

-fractional distillation under reduced pressure could be used to separate the base oils.

-ultracentrifuge might separate oil into layers by mol weight, then you can measure refractive index with interferometer to see if there is a sharp boundary between layers (uniform molecules) or a gradual change

Or you could change it with the oil of your choice and go out for a beer and enjoy life.

That's my plan. Take the kid camping and forget all the M1 drama.
Life's too short - I wish you guys luck in the X-Files episode of identifying the oils and the base stocks of which they are made.

I'm still willing to sell my under-used M1 to those who think it's barely warn-in

WOW, this has been an interesting read with all this M1 hoopla. I stopped buying it a long time ago because it was just getting too expensive. I am using PP and Super Tech synthetic and have no qualms about it. My vehicles run just fine without the M1. It pains me to think the money that I have spent on it that I could have saved for something else. Oh well, I am going for that perverbial beer now and get ready to put some Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40 in my Audi.

Just to add to the pile. I was in Walmart and noticed that the 5L 5W20 Mobil 1 was $34.00 while the 5W30 in the 4.4L jug was $38.00. I thought that was abit odd. I went on the Mobil's (Canada) website and clicked on the products 5W20 and 5W30. It states in the PRECAUTIONS:

"Mobil 1 5W20 is manufactured from high quality petroleum base stocks, carefully blended with selected additives."

"Mobil 1 5W30 is manufactured from high quality synthetic base oil, carefully blended with selected additives."

I'm definitely no oil chemist, and I attempted a search which yielded me about 300 threads. What's the significance of Group IV and Group V, and what makes it superior to Group III? I do want to run full synthetic oils in my cars, and since Mobil 1 has become so expensive, I'm not opposed at this point to switching to something that's 'better', or equal to at a lower price if possible. Could someone please shed some light? I'd be here for months reading thru the threads looking for this answer.

Thanks much

Was told by Joe from XOM tech that it is a Group IV only oil, and their is no Group III in it. LOL

427Z06 stated---Nope, He sampled some current Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and it too was "MOSTLY mineral oil, presumably Group III."

Anyone know where the above was stated. I guess I missed this part completely. In the original post he stated it was only a small part group III with Group IV and V also present. This was on the EP 15-50 he tested.

That price discrepency does not have anything to do with the product itself. I've seen price discrepencies like that in WalMart many times on other oils. Not that long ago they had a huge pile of Esso dino on a skid in the aisle : $8 for 4.5 liter jug. Meanwhile over on the regular shelves. 4.4 liter jugs of the same oil were still priced at $13.89 or some such thing. Same thing last year with Valvoline Maxlife and Pennzoil Conventional.

There is no problem for me that Mobil 1 is switching to Group3, I am using RP. At least I know what I get(except Synerlec). Mobil 1 here in Norway cost 38.50USD!!!,so I won't buy it anyway.

Or one liter, I thought Norway ran on the metric system.
Yup, synthetics are extremely expensive in Europe, most of it due to high taxes.
One reason why I refuse to buy synthetics when over there.

Is the problem with M1 that they had a conflict with Castrol using the word synthetic with Syntec and GIII and now we find out that they may now be doing the same thing? Is there oil still the about the same quality, all along? I'm surprised because I never knew M1 was anything other than an average synthetic oil with many equal peers and some better.

Yes, we're using the metric system and oil is extremely expensive... Well everything is extremely expensive here... due to taxes... taxes on cars are around 100% or more if it's a performance car..
