They've added group III. Now all they need is MORE COWBELL!

Explore the stage, Gene...
Now let's lay down that track - together!

I am beginning to think that this whole thing is a conspiracy to get more hits on BITOG!
I haven't seen so much heated posting since I've been here - very entertaining.

I guess us dummy 3-4k M1 users are the winners - M1 isn't as good as everyone thought, and we changed it too often, so we win!

Oh well, it is entertaining to watch this unfold - is this the "October Surprise"?

I once asked this question several months ago, and was told that our competitors would love to know as well. It seemed like the guy thought I was worked for a competitor.

I better watch what I say on here, or else I can forget about ever getting a job with ExxonMobil.

Well the guy that spoke up about it containing GIII said it was only the 15W50 I thought? I thought he said that they sampled Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and it was all PAO? So if it is only the 15W50 then little harm has been done as few people use it. I agree if it is true adn they have used a GIII in a product they are calling synthetic shame on them!!!! I say we at least give them the chance to either change their marketing and labeling to reflect any changes and be truthful before we lower the hammer on them. Now if they try to continue to lie once we have solid evidence of what they are doing then we let them have it! Everycompany deserves at least one chance to make right! Heck do you know how much lag time their is in a company the size of EM? Marketing could just be way behind especialy seeing how this wouldnot be a positive change in the eyes of us diehard PAO nuts!!!

What's really going to "frost my cork" on this whole M1-Grp III issue, is that I've always defended M1 against the Grp III conspiracy crackpots with the following ExxonMobil statements:

From the ExxonMobil Chemicals FAQ's on Synthetic Base Oils

Q What is the definition of synthetic lubricants?

A Synthetic lubricants are manufactured in chemical plants by reacting components and are specifically designed to possess physical and performance characteristics that are superior to mineral oils. As a result, the molecular structure of synthetic lubricants can be precisely arranged to meet, and often exceed, manufacturers’ criteria for high-performance equipment.

Q How are Group II and Group III base stocks different from Group IV (PAO) stocks?

A Group II and Group III base stocks are enhanced mineral oils that are manufactured by a refining and extraction process which partially removes undesirable molecules that are present in the feed. In contrast, Group IV (PAO) base stocks are chemically synthesized and therefore, do not contain undesirable species.
Group II base stocks may be made by hydrotreating, hydrocracking or combinations of solvent processing and hydrogen processing. They have 80 -120 VI with more than 90% saturates and less than or equal to 0.03% sulfur. Group III base stocks are manufactured by hydrocracking and isomerizing slack wax. They generally have more than or equal to 120 VI with more than or equal to 90% saturates and less than or equal to 0.03% sulfur.

.
.
And now my comment is simply this, "Come on, XOM, put aside any synthetic fluids definition doublespeak & make a statement that Mobil 1 Regular & EP are blended from primarily PAO & AN base stocks."

Claiming "proprietary information" only grows the cloud of suspicion!

Nope, He sampled some current Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and it too was "MOSTLY mineral oil, presumably Group III."

Maybe it's time for a Tyler Durden Mission to all the local oil retailers? Make up some stickers that say, "Now made with cheaper basestock, just like all the other synthetics."

How about this gem in that reference?

What percentage of synthetic engine oils is PAO and Group V base stocks (ester and other synthetics)?

Fully synthetic engine oils generally contain 70% to 80% PAO , 5% to 10 % Group V base stocks and the remaining portion are additives. However, some engine oil marketers have elected to use higher ratios.

I'm going to email them with this information. Perhaps others can call?

Go for it Al.

How many of you think XOM has been doing this for quite awhile? Keeping the industry/consumer thinking they are PAO when in reality the formulators were using Group III all along? Woudln't suprise me. In fact, I bet they wouldn't even tell their tech staff.

Probally since Katrina has Mobil 1 been "questionable". It blows me away that, with 2 product lines, that Mobil did not at least retain PAO base in their EP line and let the regular line go to the dogs. Wow.

I wonder if Bill O'Reilly would be interested in knowing how EOM is treating their synthetic oil customers? Seems like he had a thing for EOM a while back.

I felt quite a while back this might be going to happen.
They said "Contains twice the supersyn as regular m1"
or something similar..
I couldnt figure out what "supersyn" was.
If supersyn was G IV basestock their marketing ________ made more
sense.
IE regular m1 20% pao and the extended performance 40%
(note this is all heresay.)

Answer: "Mobil1 motor oils are 100% synthetic, utilizng the PAO basestock and proprietary blend of additives that is tailored specifically for each viscosity. Mobil does not discuss specifics about our motor oil formulations."

Why am I not surprised?

One of the tech reps, who George from AVLube said Mobil 5000 contained no Na, wouldn't answer my question when I brought up Group III. What a joke.
