Update, 2002 Lancer Tranny, Amsoil MTF/MTG mixture

Good afternoon all!

Some may recall my post about refilling my wife's 2002 Mitsu Lancer 5-speed with MTG and her subsequent complaint of hard shifting when it was cold (approx 40 deg F).

Today, I drained the original MTG into a clean catch pan (cut from an empty SuperTech gallon anti-freeze bottle) and refilled with one quart of MTF, and just under two quarts of MTG. This is about a 66% MTG and 33% MTF mixture.

Took it for a test drive this afternoon. While it's warm today, about 80 deg F, it was absolutely butter smooth. Seems far better than with straight MTG. I will test drive it on the next cold morning to see if the cold shift quality has improved.

I planned to try a mixture of these two oils in my S2000, but found the new improved Honda MTF to work very well so far. I have a quart of MTF and MTG ready to go, so it will probably go in there next. This transmission shears oil quickly!

I wonder who makes the new Honda MTF?

I also wonder - is it thick like the Amsoil MTG (being a gear oil) or relatively thin like Amsoil MTF?

I'm not sure who makes it, but Mobil makes their engine oil. I suspect the MTF viscosity is similar to SAE 10W30/75W85 GL4. Honda recommends to use 10W30 engine oil in a pinch, but switch back to MTF soon thereafter.

You thinned the fluid from a 75w90 to a 75w85. Since you're sticking with a high quality full synthetic boutique fluid, fear of increased wear is nil.
Thinner fluid will ususally ease shifts. But, does it really get that cold in Alabama?

Check the VOA or UOA section. Honda MTF is a 30wt and IMO a little too thin for anyone requiring gear oil.
Nissan has a 75w85 and Ford has a 75w90.

The Redline MT90/MTL or Amsoil MTG/MTF ratio blends are pretty common for anyone wanting a slightly thinner gear oil.

It can. I'm in Northern Alabama, about 15 miles south of Tennessee. I've seen single digit temps in the Winter (seem to recall 7 deg F as the all-time low in my time here), yet we saw 108 deg F just this Summer.

My wife noticed cold shift problems when the overnight low was about 40 def F - not all that cold! If its that balky/notchy at 40, I can only imagine how ugly it will be when below freezing.

A cold front is inbound so I show know soon if the new mix works.
