I have a 3S-FE in my Camry and this is so true.
I'm waiting a few months to tackle this job when I do the timing belt.
My mechanic already replaced the oil pump o-ring and gaskets when he did my timing belt job @ 180K miles.
You don't need to remove the pan to change the oil pump seal, and "o" ring on a "S" series engine.
I've done many of these. Just remove the pump from the body, and leave the body attached to the block. Put the pump in a vice (With a cloth around the impeller, so as not to scratch it) Remove the 12 mm nut on the shaft. Then pop out the old seal. Coat the lip of the new seal in grease (Not necessary on OEM Toyota seals, as they already have the grease from the factory) and Tap it in to the housing with a socket and small hammer. Make sure it is even all the way around. Reinstall the shaft, gear and nut. Next remove the remaining pieces of the "O" ring from the pump housing on the engine. Next fill the "O" ring grove on the pump body with grease to hold the new "O" ring in place. Place the new "O" ring in the grove. Line up the triangle marks on the pump impeller, with the rotor in the housing, & Reinstall the pump to the body.
