UOA's: Useless or Helpful

Hi guys, I don’t post much, but I can assure you I’ve done quite a bit of reading on many of the topics that are discussed here. With the exception of a few topics, bitog seems to have a general philosophy that most people follow regarding everything with varying levels of acceptance. I also find it curious how people that allegedly know quite a bit about chemistry and petroleum can say something on the board and everyone seems to take it as gospel. The entire Mobil 1 debate is a prime example. I’d like to see these lab reports and spectral analyses. I’d like to see some actual evidence instead of speculation. A patent for something means nothing. It’s like making a diner reservation, it doesn’t mean you will show up.

Regardless, anyone that is familiar with this site knows that many people look a little too hard at these used oil analysis. I’ll give you an example. Many people have obtained a car with no history or have their own car that has been run mostly on conventional with moderate intervals. The individual decides to try synthetic for the first time and subsequently does a used oil analysis. He discovers that his wear metals are alarmingly high. He freaks out and goes back to conventional. The next used oil analysis shows things are normal.

There is this thing called a lurking variable. I’ll give you an example from the Wikipedia that is a little easier to understand than the one I had in mind.

Ice cream consumption and murder rates are highly correlated. Now, does ice cream incite murder or does murder increase the demand for ice cream? Neither: they are joint effects of a common cause or lurking variable, namely, hot weather. Another look at the sample shows that it failed to account for the time of year, including the fact that both rates rise in the summertime.

Now, did the used oil analysis show higher wear numbers because of the alleged poor performance of the synthetic or did the synthetic simply clean out quite a bit of the deposits left from the previous oils. There are many examples of people on here that continue to utilized the synthetics after this and the wear levels off. Perhaps this is because things are now clean. Perhaps things went back to normal when the conventional was once used again because of the lesser amount of detergents.

Some people have had better used oil analysis on a new engine with conventional versus synthetic when it would be quite apparent that there are no deposits to clean. Perhaps this is because any wear metals that would normally be suspended in the oil are instead becoming trapped in a deposit somewhere. Or perhaps the wear metals from the conventional oil are so large that a majority are caught in the oil filter.

A used oil analysis can not determine things of this nature and many people on this board can barely read a lab book, let alone a lab report. A used oil analysis in situations like this can only give you the result, and not necessarily the cause.

It would be like a report to tell you that there is a dead body. However the report can’t tell you the cause. Someone can speculate, but it doesn't mean that it is true.

Doesn’t anyone feel the same way? Does this board have too many armchair scientists?

You decide. I’d like to hear any comments.

For the novice it's usually very simple. You typically don't know what you're looking at in terms of wear markers. The UOA isn't normally intended to track wear. It's to determine the condition of the oil. Now we can see if something is "abnormal" or elevated from norms. If there is contamination with associated wear ...and whatnot ..but most of us are pretty numb about it. So, we look at flash point, insolubles, viscosity, and known contaminants. We look at statistical data versus our data (UA).

We're not tribologists ..but I'll be grandiose and say that we're able to figure out that lower is better. Some of us can actually integrate cause and effect on many things in our environment.

As far as someone using synthetic and seeing elevated metals ..well, that's typically disruptions of an aggressive additive package. Redline is good for that on some engines ...not so much on others. It goes away after a while.

Keep in mind you're dealing with "people". A good number of them are of the philosophy of "NEVER AGAIN!!!" if they encounter the least bit of dissatisfaction with any product regardless of how obscure or remote the incidence of, for lack of a better term, failure. Many encounter something like ONE leaking or defective ADBV on ONE filter and brand the entire company as shoddy manufacturers. Now any sensible person could figure out that any company can have a defective part in the millions that they produce ..and you might just be the one to get it ..but there's little gain reasoning with that type of personality.

). OTOH, many of us are critical of our environment and its inner workings. We have to know what the man is doing behind the curtain.
 
Whenever I find an interesting oil in the used oil analysis section that someone has tested and I'm thinking I might like to try. . . they always have a coolant leak. I don't know how many times I've ran a search on MaxLife only to find their test results showing a coolant leak.

Let's see...this is a public forum. And some of the armchair scientists are very knowledgeable people. I don't recall seeing anyone post something that was "ludicrous" as is suggested. Hanging around here does educate you as well. It's a great source of free information. Why be so cynical?

used oil analysis are cheap insurance. Once a year they can give you a snap shot of the inside conditions of your engine interpreted by a professional like Terry. It's a great prevetative maintenence tool to help spot potential problems.

Wear is the debatable element that some don't fully buy into. Lower the better, but how significant some of these wear metals are can be debated.

You don't have to be a scientist to know that 4 consecutive runs of brand X with an avg of 50 ppm of Fe is not as good as brand Y which had an avg. of 25ppm of Fe under similar conditions. Same with other measures. Assuming anything more than that is strecthing it for 99% of us excluding Terry.

Last, extended drains. Absolute necessity when running extended drain intervals which is why large Fleets utilize oil analysis.

I also agree with Farrarifan. Actually, I don't mind the armchair experts who have read a lot and studied. They might make mistakes, but they are honest mistakes. The dangerous ones are the folks who have not read much, don't do any research and are the first ones to spout off with hard recommendations on any thread as if they are experts. It contaminates the information content on the board. Yes, I know it is unavoidable on a public forum, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I don't think they are ever useless, but often misinterpreted.
Usually helpful - as in finding out: "....oops you have a coolant leak..."

We like to pretend they are helpful in selecting or rather condemning an oil - we all enjoy the sport. However, care must be exercised, especially when flopping around with oils, sleeping with the latest gas additive, messing around with viscosity changing oil additive, driving like a bat out of h3ii on the race track at 120° or on the back road on a -5°F day with a cold engine and no thermostat.....and saying well ****e howdy look my lead went from 2 to 4 ppm, this oil is KHRAP.

This is why it is important to be a critical reader and thinker. Those who understand that do provide evidence for the things that they say. If there is no evidence provided, you have to either discount what is said or take a wait and see attidude or decide for yourself based on your own experience.
 
Many good points here... Also, I'd like to add that apparently, UOA has to be done on second run of same brand/viscosity oil.

Another thing I noticed is that UOA is valuable on cars with higher mileage than brand new ones. If you keep filtration (air/oil) right and not mess with additives on top of oil newer cars should be just fine (after initial wear)

It is also common knowledge that fuel dilution occurs when doing stopngo/short trips.
 
used oil analysis are valuable on still-under-warranty vehicles too. It will pinpoint a contamination issue - saving the owner a repair expense after the warranty expires.
 
I totally agree with using used oil analysis to see how well your choice of oil is performing during your vehicle's recommended OCI, or to find a problem that would otherwise be invisible. Where the logic becomes fuzzy to me is when people use it to determine whether or not they can stretch out their OCI, when the money spent on the used oil analysis and postage could have just been spent on new oil and a filter. It's almost like driving 20 miles to save $.20 on a gallon of milk....you've spent the money either way.

Some of us aren't necessarily doing longer intervals in order to save money though, in many cases we just want to spend less time changing the oil and also we like to know that we aren't draining out perfectly good oil before it's necessary.

For me, used oil analysis have never been a cost saving exercise, they've been mostly entertainment and information for me. And on the off chance my engines develop some sort of coolant leak, I'll be able to catch it in time, and that's when it would save me money.

I don't think this is a good analogy - it's not as if you have to do a used oil analysis every lengthened OCI. I certainly don't. It's mostly a proof of concept, with enough margin in the oil life to allow for the many variables. This works in practice.
 
Plus keep in mind once you know a certain oil can go a certain distance in your engine, you'll probably end up saving time & money in the long run if you keep running those newly extended OCIs that you now know are do-able in your car...

Yes too many people write as if they conclusively know the answer. Kind of the trouble with a public internet board.

I have tried to encourage other trained and experienced educators and professionals to contribute here.

Most cannot, will not, or try and get their feelings hurt or are limited with a "brand" being exposed and leave.

If you are a GT engineering person with a specialty in tribology, materials, or lubricants,chemistry who can add value and quality PLEASE do!

I was recently told be a chemist that the additive package of an oil can impact a used oil analysis report in showing higher wear metals. Obviously RL came to mind but I also wonder if this is also the case for M1.

In that thread Wolf just posted, Mobil 1 0w-40 performed very well. Mobil 1 also trounced other oils in the HTO-06 Honda deposit test. This leads me to believe that maybe Mobil is using strong dispersant chemistry that either A) gives up a bit more wear for better deposit/sludge control or B) shows slightly higher wear metals from a similar way Redline does or C)It's just average at wear prevention.

I don't understand how some tribologists rip on oils and don't take these things into consideration. I'm not referring to bruce/Molekule.
