This is my first UOA and first oil change for my 1995 Geo Prizm which I have acquired a few days before changing the oil on it. The previous owner said that he changed the oil to a synthetic oil after he replaced the valve cover gasket because it was leaking. He said the oil was changed about 4000 miles ago, so I am not sure how close it is to 4000 miles but according to Blackstone Labs they conclude that wear is around the average levels for 4000 miles. They mentioned that sodium seemed high but that it was not likely antifreeze because the wear didn't indicate that it was, they said it could be an oil additive, ...possibly the oil. I wasn't told what viscosity it was but Blackstone determined it to most likely be a 5w-30. I have replaced the oil with Mobil 1 after taking the sample.

I figured that since this is the first use of synthetic in the engine that I would see more wear metals if it was cleaning off any varnish or sludge but it must have been a good and clean engine in the first place, from the very limited view that I get from the oil cap, it looks clean in there and the previous owner said when he looked under the valve cover when he changed its gasket he said that things looked pretty clean. The oil looked darker than I normally see that but I figure it's what was cleaned out from the dino changes of the past. I'm curious as to what oil this is, I noticed that he had Amsoil in his garage but I didn't ask which synthetic he used when he told me that he switched to synthetic. I was thinking of running my first UOA with Mobil 1 SM/GL-4 grade 5w-30 with a Purolator filter for 3,000 miles to get a baseline, but from this analysis I am thinking of just running 5,000 miles and checking in from there. I drive a total of 55 miles highway miles per day, four days a week, and mostly highway driving on the weekend, so I figure that 5,000 miles would be a safe start, Should be about 4 months, I am not sure what the conditions were for the oil that was in this sample however. Either way it looks like this engine is in good shape.

What do you guys think about these results?

I hate it when you don't know what oil you have in there. It could be that the sodium is from a previous change like one of the Exxon/Mobil oils with sodium additives. Seems good so far. Next analysis will tell more.

Wow, a 7AFE Corolla engine with low wear. Who'd have thought

Nice results. That sodium would've raised the hair on my neck though.

Al, what you have said makes sense, Mobil 7500 or 5000 seem to have the sodium in them. I'm starting to think that the previous UOA may have had some make up oil to it since I have been driving it about 500 miles since the oil change and am noticing about 1/8 quart drop so I might just expect a quart or possibly a little bit more of make up oil due to consumption, there seems to be no leaks. Looking at other information on the 4afe and 7afe engines, it seems commonplace with high speed driving, a possible viscosity increase for the summer? Silicon is the number that usually goes up when you replace a gasket? I'm not seeing that expressed in this UOA since the gasket was a recent replacement, does that seem odd?
