Well it's time for part 3 yall! I just spent the better part of the last 3 1/2 hours putting it all back together again. Took a few tries, first I had the piston on backwards so the big end bolts were hitting on the crankcase wall.... I did grind it down with a dremel it seems to be pretty tight, but we'll see. Alot of the noise problem I think came from the flywheel bearings have a bind in them when the piston is near TDC. Not sure why, but I'm fairly confident if I put gas and oil in it, that it would run. Now I just need to get some 15W-50 or something to put in it and wait for the Restore to get here. I'll keep y'all posted. Oh yeah, the worst part by far was getting the camshaft lined up properly so the valves open when they're supposed to. Looking at it now, you would never be able to tell the abuse the thing went through.

3 days unless UPS is really nice and it arrives a day early, which has happened in the past. On wednesday it is supposed to get here.

I'll bet that it reduces smoke while running and upon disassembly, a slickness is noted on the cylinder walls and crank bearing surface. I don't think it'll fill in everything, but I bet you'll see a noticeable difference.

But you have to add the restore to hot oil and let the engine run for awhile until it gets to full operating temp, and then cool down overnight. Only by the next day will the restore have had a chance to work.

Haha I'm not taking the whole dang thing apart again. Too messy, and too much of a pain in the butt. If it has worked when I take the cylinder head off... Well, I'll take pics, and then probably continue using it for leaves and branches and stuff.I hope it makes a noticable difference in my cav too... Hopefully the power gained by the restore and then the HP freed by switching to the thinner PP 5w30 will mean that I won't be crying every time I try to accelerate.

Well, the head will be fine. That way we can get a good idea of what it's doing to the cylinder wall. IMO, the smoke before and after will really tell the tale.

Dang edit period is too small. I might go put some in it tonight to make sure it actually runs anymore before I put the restore in it and then would end up wasting it.

And..... Well, good news bad news time. The good news is it turns over pretty easily once I managed to turn it over on its side and bang it around to get some oil slung everywhere. It turns over well enough. It is definitely firing. The head gets warm. But, it is trying to start. I pull it and it fires and chugs slowly while it tries to overcome whatever friction is preventing it from starting. But it's a good sign of things to come. I will try again tomorrow, and if that doesn't work, hopefully the restore will fix it. Oh, and I used 2-stroke gas down the intake to get some upper cylinder lubrication to start. Then tried starting fluid. It is firing fo sho.

Edit> Oh and that knock wasn't rod knock. Not sure what it is, but it is still present. Sounds like something in the valvetrain that is causing it, or something. Oh well.

Come on UPS, the suspense is killing us.

Of course, it might take a couple of hours run-time for the
Restore to make a difference. With any additive, 500-miles
would be a common timeframe in a vehicle before a real difference
is noticed. In a Briggs, i'd think a few hours would suffice.

Good News, UPS Tracking info states that package is 'In Transit -
On Time' and arrived in New Stanton, PA Tuesday evening. Should
definately be on your doorstep on Wednesday. Oh well, so much
for showing up a day early, but at least on it's way....

P.S. - Hope it starts easier for you tomorrow....

Tomorrow is the big day. Went out and got it started. It still knocks, and smokes a bit. Smokes less than before though, I attribute that to it being a 15w40 dino oil. So we'll see what happens.

I've tried restore many years ago unless formula has changed but I didn't see any results I was expecting. First of all you got a splash lubrication system...does the restore settle to the bottom if there is no oil pump to circulate the oil. Mind you the oil will mix eventually but it will be interesting to see if the restore will cure the problem.

BTW what is your oil sump capacity and how much restore is being injected into the sump.

Hadn't thought of that....I don't think it will sink to the bottom the way it's designed, but it's possible I guess. But the short time I'm using it it shouldn't matter. I completely forgot to leave room for it so I might have to drain some 15w40 out of it. I was thinking 2/3 oil, 1/3 restore (which is SAE 30W oil)

Glad it arrived ok, UPS is usually pretty good about that stuff. Of course,
it was very well packed (I try anyway). 1/3 or even 1/4 should be enough.
According to the quantity of the can, it looks like about 10% is the quantity
used in an automobile engine. Of course, being an 'Unkillable Briggs', i'd
probably go with 1/4 to 1/3 like you'd been thinking about. If you planned
on saving the rest for your Cavalier, you should still have enough after this
to put in there - probably wouldn't go 50/50 though. Although that might be
interesting as well, since it is a 30W anyway.... hhhmmmmmmm

It will be interesting to see the before/after reguardless.

I stumbled upon this saga and after some reading I am morbidly interested on seeing how this has played out thus far.... A vid or two of it running would be interesting as well..

I have an old 1992 Toro with a B&S engine. I have fed it 15w40 since I got it used and change the oil every year and treat it pretty well. Its a good mower. I think it will probably last me until I am dead...and then some with the good treatment its getting...

Check out the first 2 parts of this series - part 1 had a video or two if I remember correctly. They're probably a couple of pages back by now.
