I haven't had a Virus since early 2000. I'm beginning to think that Anti-Virus scanners are obsolete. Majority of the scamwares like the "Anti-Virus" Scamware/Malware was not detected by my anti-virus. Majority of problems were solved with Malwarebytes and Spybot program. I've noticed that my anti-virus program "Avast" does more of a burden than good. Many legit programs are interfered by it and it slows my computer down during start up.

What you all think? Uninstall it? Are Anti-virus programs obsolete?

I don't find it is obsolete, at least it will help to limit the damage to the system, and you are hopeful that you are not the first to get the zero day attack.

If you are willing to spend money, upgrade to the McAfee or Symantec Internet Security that has Anti Virus and Malware protection.
If you don't want to spend money, go with microsoft Security Essential or AVG, and continue your practice with Malwarebytes and Spybot regularly.

+1

What version of Avast are you using? Make sure it's the latest. I run the latest and it doesn't bother my system--and my PC is 10 years old and slower than I am.

Also make sure that you don't have it configured to scan all files or anything nutty like that. Just use the defaults (there is a way to reset everything to the defaults, in the settings).

Microsoft Security Essentials is OK too, and incredibly simple to use.

Any way you slice it, no they are not obsolete. The best security is not to do stupid things, but having anti-malware software installed (e.g. Avast, correctly spelled "avast!") is important.

+1 this is an awesome FREE program from Microsoft. Love it.

+2 to microsoft essentials... Using it for over a year now and its great. Low on resources and perfoms well. I also run CC cleaner and Malware Bytes only when needed to clean out the other [censored] too. Run those, and you will be fine!

Msse for free, trend micro or kaspersky paid. Norton and McAfee are horrible for slowing down computers. Most of the ones I sell come with Norton preinstalled. When I'm on pre set up duty removing Norton is the first thing I do and it makes a big difference. Ymmw though

Avast updates everything automatically so I assume I have the current version. I turned off a lot of the settings and only set it to check my network and internet activity. My computer seems to run faster.
