Under 6 Volts on my VW GTI Battery

No, not a lot of short trips, per se. I have had issues with the infotainment system, etc. Maybe I have a parasitic draw somewhere.
Batteries are finicky products. Even good quality, well known brands have occasional premature failures, which are documented here.

I may take a battery from another car, so that I can drive to the dealer. I'd put the bad battery back in before leaving.
Can't you jump start it from another vehicle or one of those jump starter packs? Or is the battery too depleted for this to work?

I went out to start my car this morning and got some strange error messages. No start.

Put my meter on the battery and it was 5 Volts and change. I have it on my CTEK charger now.

But 5 Volts? Is the battery internally damaged?
Time to delve into the egg money...It's bad.

I'm up to 10 Volts now on the charger, so I may be able to get to where I can jump it. Maybe I'll just leave it on the charger.

Last evening I was telling the kids next door...when I was growing up, eggs and toilet paper were so plentiful we went out at night and threw at the neighbor's house for fun!
Way back, long ago, wives took their chicken's eggs to sell at the general store for extra money. That's what I actually meant by "egg money". :)

My LR2 H7 AGM battery died last Jan. It too has voltage less than 10 volts. Set it on a charger for 2 days and it does not go beyond 11 volts. It is still under warranty but had to wait for it to be tested. The battery failed the test, and I got a new one.

The car is about a year old and under warranty. Unfortunately, I think I will have to have it towed to the dealer.
Been there. My wife’s 24 battery completely crapped out setting at the Detroit airport in less than a week. No warning, nothing! AAA got us going and the dealer replaced it. What’s worrisome is the tech told me that they have new cars coming off the car haulers with bad batteries. Apparently there’s little pride taken in battery manufacturing now days. I’m watching this battery like a hawk and have jump packs in all our cars now.

Did you happen to confirm AGM or EFB? If it's an AGM, there will be no sense in leaving it on the charger as it probably won't get above 11-11.5 volts. The battery is damaged/failed internally and no lengthy amount of charging will bring it back to fully usable voltage that will allow you to start and drive it without causing issue in one of the multitude of control modules, if not shut down while underway due to low voltage in one or more of those modules. If your dealer is worth their weight, they will have a tech come out and drop a new battery in it for you or provide a tow.

Most VW batteries are EFB, but pretty sure a GTI could have either.

My EFB clearly said EFB on it, I believe the AGMs do as well.

FWIW VW says an AGM in the engine compartment MUST have a battery cover.

I would not try to recover a battery that was under warranty personally.

Before you get a new battery, does your VW require a code to be entered to work properly? I got a new Everststart for my brother's VW, and it did not work properly because the code was different. That was new to me??

If it's VW labeled OEM it will. VW seems to be trying to phase out EFBs recently and going AGM for start/stop. My local dealer does not even keep any EFBs in stock anymore.

I'm at 11.83V now, but battery tester says replace.

Mine is AGM (Varta).

Probably, my Tiguan did in a way. Not a code really but a serial number , capacity and battery type. AGM is “fleece” in VW world. Under warranty the dealer should set this, but I did it in VCDS. You can use OBDeleven as well. Out of warranty my dealer wanted $130 for about a minute of effort. That’s more than the cost of OBDeleven!

The change isn’t “required” but it tells the computer that you have a new battery and the type will set the charging voltage. It will still work without making any changes.

My $0.03 adjusted for inflation is what was previously said - car under warranty, VW roadside assistance, have them deal with it, don't give any details.

This hasn't really been a VW thing for about a decade.

And even back then, the car would work "fine" without coding.

I think this is probably best. I got the car started and my battery tester now says "good, recharge," but the car is all wonky with multiple errors coming up. I'm not sure I want to drive it.
