i am looking to get a cheap smart watch to wear while i am working on the house or car. i want a cheap one as its going to get beat up and i don't intend to wear it out in public.

So there is a plethora of them on ali express and amazon. anyone have experience with the cheap models? Do they hold up?

I bought a Timex Expedition like this a couple of months ago. It has a nice indiglo feature that lets me tell the time during my frequent nocturnal bathroom trips. None of my other watches can match it for legibility. The build quality is supurb at the price point ~$45 from Amazon and it is very accurate. I believe most Timex watches are assembled in the Philippines. Can't say how long they run but probably several years until the battery runs down.

Does it have to be a smart watch? I presume you are after notifications, in case someone calls or texts? Can you find a yet cheaper not-so-smart watch that just does notifications--does it have to be "smart" or just receive notifications from a nearby phone?

I'm finding that I don't want to wear my "nice" watch while working on the car, and I don't want to have my phone in my pocket while doing so too, as I might scratch either up. Rest of the time, I feel ok having both on me. I don't have notifications turned on for my watch though, if I don't have my phone on me, chances are, I don't want to be bothered. Leave a message, I'll get back to you. In the garage, I'll just rest my phone on the workbench, I can pick it up periodically and check. I'm getting old and cranky, I don't feel a need to respond within seconds to anything anymore.

Otherwise... sorry, have no info, other than to play devil's advocate here. Cheap items tend to get cheap results.

check LIGE brand smart watches. They are very good - I have verified the blood pressure and heart beat functions with medical devices a few times and the watch is accurate. Mine counts steps accurately but doesn't differentiate between steps and stairs. But it's maybe 3 years old now, newer models will be better.

Pairs well with my current iPhone and with Android in the past.

I waiting for the all smart comments like, "who wears a watch these days."
I do - have a small collection of watches. My favorite is a vintage melody watch from early 80-s :) that I bought from Bulgaria

^This. My whole fam is rolling with the LIGE smart watches now. I'm wearing one as I type this, my daily. Great watch. On TEMU website we got them for $25-45, depending on shape/colors/options.
Mine works great to keep my vitals in check (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, glycose monitoring, lung RPM). Plus the usual burnt calorie count, step count, and stepladder tracker.
Water proof for as deep as I could physically go in the ocean, lakes, pools. Not sure of the exact depth measurement, but I'll likely drown before I'm able to reach it.
Battery life is 4 days. More or less depending on what settings you turn on, such as weather/location/notifications/messages/etc. I keep it simple and light on those settings, and as result get 4 days out of a battery effortlessly.

Now that's something. I don't think Apple watches monitor blood pressure, I hope they do eventually. That's when I'll buy one.
Yeah, I have an Apple Watch 7, I am sure you read my stories of how it got me medical treatment in an expedited manner.
Apple gets their stuff approved when they make a claim about something of which their ECG on the watch is approved by the FDA.
(or something like that) Its the reason I bought the watch and that ECG function allowed my heart specialists to see what was going on when I was home at night, in the middle of the night being woken up by a racing/pounding heart beat.

I do expect them to come out sooner or later with the BP monitoring but when they do I would expect once again they go through the approval or clearance process. I THINK they acquired a company or something like it that has technology for cuff less BP measurement.
Anyway, agree, I will update my watch if and when it becomes available.

Still I find what another in here interesting that the BP readings he gets from his non Apple smart watch are fairly accurate and I certainly believe him so that increases my hope that maybe Apple will get a device approved for this.

Im in great health BTW but part of that reason as I got older is I am into taking care of myself and I LOVE INSTRUMENTATION just the same as I love gauges on my cars, boat and motorcycle, I love it for my body/heart which is the most improtant of all to catch something early. I had easily fixable what turned into very frequent PVCs into sometimes more serious looking things at an early stage.

7 hours of a Cardiac Ablation in the hospital for PVCs and I walked out the same day took care of it 100% so far anyway.

Anyway, I just found this =

From the story above ... I guess they are all coming soon, I find this freaking awesome.
"Major smartwatch manufacturers, like Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit, are still developing their blood pressure tech for FDA clearance in the United States."

My hope one day is blood sugar monitoring, just as all the above to help me eat as healthy as I can. I dont have diabetes but my family history is a disaster and says I should so I got a free Glucose Monitor from my Advantage C plan and I know exactly how my blood sugar runs just for fun and within the normal below 100 fasting and well below accepted levels after dinner eating.

I always like posting my watches to people who say this. They always think I'm nuts and I know many people that have much more money wrapped up in watches than I do.

Yes I have, and your posts are one of the reasons I would like to get an Apple watch eventually. Definitely looking forward to a future BP functionality.

Ha! I am the same way. I also love diagnostics like blood work and imaging. Hopefully the Japanese toilet maker Toto's futuristic "health monitoring toilet" comes out sooner than later:

Don't you need a magnifying glass to read them? I mean, it's hard enough to read an email on a smart phone, letalone tiny watch screen.
No and most of all, at least with the Apple Watch the phone conversations are amazingly clear to both parties. IN fact the other most likely will never know you are talking through your watch OR the watch might actually sound more clear.
Yes, you can read text messages and actually voice to text on the watch works quite well in order to respond.
You can also view photos.
Obviously texting and photos on a large screen is a luxury and the watch is a convenance, such as me typing on a 27 inch monitor right now.
