I don't understand the price though? PP is a decent seller and they want to introduce PU into the market. The smart thing to do would price the Ultra closely to Platinum to see if it can gain a foothold. Except for morons like me, who else is going to pay a premium ($28)when they could have Platinum for $20. Maybe it's that urge to try that new thing?

If this was the best oil ever bottled it wouldn't sell at $28.

Most of the, synthetic oil buying, public only understand 2 things:

1. Mobil 1

2. Synthetic oil that is cheaper than Mobil 1.

I just LOL'd

Good post.

I just purchased a 5w20 jug of it to try in my 2008 xB. I am about to drain my 0w20 PP and put this oil in. I plan to run it about 6,500-7,500 miles then get a UOA+TBN (and see how far I could go, roughly). Hopefully pennzoil will have released the 0w20 version that I can run throughout next winter by the time I drain the 5w20!

As far as it selling, my WM had a few jugs but it seemed to be selling. It was not stocked all the way to the back like the others.

ok I got it now, The chinese have bought Volvo and pennzoil so the reason PU isnt selling is that it can now only be used in Volvo's in china and purchased at walmart here for to much more money than other synthetics, right?

I emailed Pennzoil about a release date for PU in 0W20. No timeline as of yet. Hopefully Edge comes out with it in the next 6 months as they said, or I pony up for a VOA on the Black Bottle Toyota 0W20.

I would prefer a $25 rebate so it's basically FREE!!!! They'll go far with FAR!

I was at my Wal-Mart today and I saw the saleslady restocking the shelves with oil. She was restocking Pennzoil Platinum and not Pennzoil Ultra. I asked her how the PU was selling, and she said it was not selling well, but that PP was selling very well.

They also dropped the price of a 5 quart jug of PP from $23.00 to $20.50

I did not see any 0W-20 motor oil on the shelves.

PU is still $28.00 for a 5 quart jug, my thinking is they probably should have kept PP at $23.00 for a 5 quart jug, and dropped the PU from $28.00 to $25.00 for a 5 quart jug.

Wal-Mart does not keep products that do not move, do you guys think they will lower the price on the 5 quart jugs of PU.

I have to agree here, everytime I go to Wal-Mart the DISPLAY of Pennzoil Ultra 5 quart jugs is full, whereas the shelves where they keep the 5 quart jugs of Pennzoil Platinum is more than half empty.

All I know is that between the free Ferrari hat and the Ferrari sweepstakes, Ultra is the ONLY oil I will use!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason it isn't selling well here is because we dont HAVE it yet... *sigh*

If I could get PU for $25 with a Motorcraft FL820S, I would need a fleet of shopping carts...there'd be none left in the county.

Edge was an attempt at a mass-market "super premium" oil.
Ultra is the same.
Since this is unlikely, there will be MIR deals and price reductions, just as there were with Edge.

Yep.

I see Edge as somewhat of a failure. Despite the "UltraHyperUberMega!" add noise, PU will not fare any better.

Grease Monkeys, Dipsticks, and colorful adjectives are simply not sufficient to market a (supposedly) premium oil. Not when the price is significantly higher.

Is Ultra for sale in Canada now? I've seen Edge, but no Ultra yet.

Ultra is undoubtedly very good stuff, but it also undoubtedly has a very good margin for both SOPUS and Walmart.
Would I pay the asking for Ultra?
If I had no stash, and needed to do a change, why not?
The incremental cost per mile is almost nil.
It may not be the greatest thing since sex, but I am pretty sure it offers better performance than the already very good PP.
Do any of my cars need it?
Of course not, but then none of my cars need the oils I am using in them right now.
