That has to be a staged photo, I can't imagine any one doing that.

Nothing is surprising anymore. Seriously.

The only real surprise in that photo is they didn’t include a queen size mattress on top of that Dodge that was secured by ONLY TWO bungee cords anchored off of the door handles.
 
When I would rent uhaul trailers a few times a year, I would use my own straps on them. First - the tires on my jeep were too big for the straps. Second, I don't like how you end up with the vehicle ALL of the tongue weight. I'd leave the vehicle back a foot or so to get better weight distribution.
 
One has to tap the master cylinder hydraulics or I guess in modern vehicles program the applicable computer and interface to it.
I'm not aware of a single modern brake controller that requires tapping into the hydraulics. Most of them just use power, a brake signal, and accelerometers to do the job.

I don't even think it was a thing in the past. They've pretty much been purely electronic since their invention.
