What should be the typical/expected oil consumption of a healthy engine per 1k miles?

My '99 nissan Max with 70k miles is using about 1/4 qt of 10W30 per 1k miles. seems like a lot to me.

1982 Porsche 924 Turbo, 60K miles-- 0 consumption.

1995 Saturn SL2 4-cyl, 155K miles -- 1qt per 600 miles "normall" says the dealer., oil-dependent.

1994 Suzuki Swift GT, 4-cyl, 34K miles-- 1qt per 2000 of race oil.

It all depends on the car, but certain oils do perform better in certain engines that tend to consume, depending on the problem. Driving style too. Suzuki goes through more oil on long high-speed trips than in traffic combined with Solo2 racing.

I have a 95 Maxima SE just turning 60K. Have you noticed any oil seepage on the ground? I have only started using a bit of oil during the last oil change. However, I had to replace my oil pressure sender unit which is cheap to buy and easy to replace and is a common problem with 4th Generation Maximas.

Look under your car. The oil pressure sender unit is located at the back end of the oil pan under the passenger seat. Check for leakage/seeping and replace the part if there is any.

I am presently 900 miles into an AutoRX clean phase and am switching to synthetic for the first time following the rinse phase.

You didn't state whether you are using synthetic or dino and what kind of driving you do.

Your oil consumption might be a tad on the high side, but nothing to worry about. Again check out the oil pressure sender unit.

And join www.maxima.org if you are not already a member. It's a high volume website for Maxima enthusiasts.

thanks. I'll check the sending unit. I am using super tech 10W30 synthetic. just switched to synthetic after 66k miles on catrol 5w30 dino. I do a lot of stop and go traffic jam driving with my AC on, and only get up to highways speeds for a few miles out of a 30 mile commute.

just curious - you only have 60k on your Max, and i assume you've done regular oil changes -- did you really need an auto Rx cycle? is it better to do this before switching to Synthetic? why?

Some car makers will tell you that a quart in 1,000 miles is OK, I think a quart in 3,000 is OK.

My more recent cars have used more like a quart in 10,000 miles.

The reason I am using the AutoRX is to clean any sludge and varnish out of the engine before switching to synthetic. I suspect the internals are relatively clean, however. I am also hoping it will restore the seals to help avoid any potential leaking problems as a result of switching to synthetic in a car going on 11 years old, which I've owned since day 1.

I thought it was normal to experience a little oil consumption when initially switching to synthetic.

What kind of initial OCI are you planning? Perhaps you should lower the initial OCI to 3 to 5K, change the oil and filter and then monitor your oil consumption. I wouldn't be surprised to see it go down in the 2nd OCI.

rats, I wish I heard of this auto Rx stuff before switching. I was planning a 5k OCI. I'll probably switch the super tech out at 3k and go for M1 5W30 and see what happens. thanks for the advice. and yes, I recently joined maxima.org - great site.

Good plan. I've used Castrol GTX 5W30 for most of the car's life, with the exception of a few oil changes at the stealership using whatever they tossed in. Following the AutoRX application, I am switching to Esso XD3 Extra, 0W30, full synthetic and planning 12-month OCIs which will be in the order of 5 or 6K miles, perhaps slightly more, but mostly highway as the car isn't used for commuting and isn't driven daily.

My 2001 Honda Civic has 187,000 miles on it. Oil consumption is half a quart per 5000 miles using Mobil 1 0w20. It's been like this since day 1.

2003 ZX2 2.0l zetec 25,000m - never uses any.
I wonder if a little oil usage would show there is good lubrication to the ring packs? Possible better cleaning/flushing?

Just checked my oil on my '96 3.8L @ 5k: 1/4 quart low.

When I first got the car, it would read more than 1/4 quart low with 3k OCIs. I've done 2 full auto-rx cleanings and am on a 3rd with GC.

In case anyone is curious, I'm doing a 3rd cleaning since I kinda sorta messed up the first.

This is a loaded question as all engine designs are going to behave deffierntly. Common industry standards for warranty work are usualy 1 quart per 850-1000 miles. I have nver owned a vechile that burnt more then a 1/2 quart per 5000 miles. My Camry has only burnt 1/4 of a quart of oil over the last (aprox) 30,000 miles. It has only burnt oil one time. I routinely go 6 months or close to 7000 miles with ZERO discernable consumption as read on the dipstick.

I think that a dosage of Auto-Rx would be a good idea. You might also try 5W40.

My Subaru Forester uses a measured 5 oz per 5,000 mile oil change using Mobil 1 synthetic. present milage is 93,000. Warranty standards are a crock in my opinion. An engine used as a daily driver that consumes more than one quart in 4,000 miles has a problem somewhere.
