Hi guys,
So far I've accumulated about 11,700 miles since bought new. Using the OLM it indicated for my life style to have my oil changed every 6K so based on that I'm OK with that figure cuz I like to use a synthetic.
Let me check my OLM gain in about a week. If it goes down another 1-2% again I know something is wrong. To even think that any computer manipulation is involved to get more money from me sounds so ganster!!! If my worst fears comes true then it would appear to me that GM dealers are up to their old tricks again.

Is it possible residual oil in the sump mixing with the fresh oil causes the OLM to drop so soon?
The oil is not actually measured for it's constituents.
Gas, anti freeze, old oil, particulate matter, actual additives, etc. are not considered.
So any mixing would not have an effect.
You are going to end up with a minimum and maximum OCI, just like always.

Durango. First off, GM's OLM always changes to 99%
when the engine is first started after an oil change.
As far as 3000 miles, that has been the standard for
many years. Just tell them you'll follow the OLM using
synthetic oil. I don't think it will be a problem.

As far as I know the OLM could not be easily tampered with. The system uses pre set programing from GM, and unless you were a software engineer, it would be near impossible for normal dealer techs to alter the programming.

I understand wha you saying. No problem.... can you tell me why after about 50 miles the OLM reading is 98%?? I'll look again tonight but I'm rpetty sure I saw what I saw.

Durango, I think you just need to relax and not worry too much about the OLM. Unless you have a stash of nitro pills.
The OLM is fine, it may drop a few percent quickly and then take a while for the percent to drop down. It depends on how your driving your car(aggressive short drives) or smooth and long. Lots of factors at play.
I did an oil change before driving down to VA and about 450-500 miles later my OLM shows I have 92% down from 99% left on the OLM.

The GM OLM is different for every car and engine combination. It will also count down differently with variations in driving technique, temperature (both ambient and engine) length of engine run time and a host of other variables.
There's been millions of dollars, countless man hours, dyno cell hours and driven miles poured into developing and testing this system. Whatever it says is safe for a mineral based oil. Using synthetic oils will give you more of a safety cushion.

However though it still doesn't account for the way the dealerships policies are set up in the way they are. By coming back for another service in 3K before the OLM runs out they seem/appears it doesn't play much of a role for GM drivers in their daily driving life. Obviously it's just a way to put more money in the dealers pockets. I wonder if GM has anything to say about this??
