Hello and good evening toyou all,

I just had today my second service done on my Chevy Impapa SS today and I have a question about the OLM monitor and their recommened service schedule.

Today the changed my oil today and asked them to use synthetic. OK when the car was ready they had reset the OLM for me as usual bu I had noriced that it was already at 99% instead of what I hd thought would be 100%. Is this considered normal???? I mean I haden't driven it off the dealership lot and already it lost 1%???? What gives????

Second question, Instead of going by the OLM they indicate they want me return an do another oil change in 3K. What gives??? If I bing it back in 3K then that na-gates the usage of my OLM.

I wonder if this is only a ploy to get me back sooner to increase/spend more money!!!! What do you guys think??? After all this is a Chevrolet dealer.

Dealers and quick lubes want all drivers stick with 3k/3mo OCI, regardless of better oil quality and better engine manufacture. The main reason is more profits for them.

Hi,
Durango - We had a long Thread here several years ago about the GM OLM. It was peppered with comments from people that had some involvement in its development

From this it appeared that it was a very reasonable and conservative device and can be safely used - use it with confidence

I have used the Benz device for several years on several cars. As well I have followed progress of this device here in OZ and backed it up with used oil analysis in these applications. Again it is a conservative device that I use with confidence. In OZ the average Benz OCI using their device is around 17kkms (11k miles). used oil analysis have shown it to be very conservative when using Approved lubricants

I've seen this before too. the loss of 1% doesn't really mean anything. You certainly didn't actually lose 1% oil life by driving it out of the service bay.

As for the scheduled return.... um... I donno. You didn't ask them? I would assume it's because of $$$

As long as a bunch of unexplained miles didn't appear on your odometer I wouldn't worry. If they did, well, if the lot boy looked tired and happy when you picked up your car, I'd steam clean the backseat :)

My GM dealership has a car window sticker for oil changes that says something like "your vehicle is equiped with an oil life monitor, bring it in for an oil change when indicated by the monitor". That's an ethical dealership in my mind.

The 3k recommendation is just for profits. They know better and are doing the wrong thing in my mind.

Mathematically speaking (and engineers do think in terms of math) as soon as you run that new oil it is no longer 100%. So something just slightly less than 100% would be 99%.

Now if you drove it only a few miles and you saw that OLM go down some more then I would wonder what the hay was going on.

I had 3 GM's with the OLM( 05 & 07 Silverado and 08 Equinox )and they always said 99% when I would come out of the dealer after an OC( I would always check to make sure they remembered to reset it ). Most places run the vehicle for a bit after doing the OC before checking the oil level and this is where I believe it drops that 1%. As I recall I tried resetting the OLM once myself and it briefly showed 100% then went right to 99%. Don't sweat it. My Sister has an 06 Impala and I take care of her maintenance and it too is at 99% after the change. That 1% goes away very fast.

No, do not waste your time and money going back at 3K. Go by the OLM. Just a way for them to make money. It negates that synthetic oil as well as the OLM as well. 5K would be the earliest I would do the OC unless the OLM drops to 10% or less before then for some reason.

On the OLM on my regal, It doesn't stay at 100% for long. It would drop to 99% when they pulled it out of the garage.

You have synthetic in there? Follow your OLM, send it to blackstone and go from there.

All they care about is your money.......

The only other reason i can think of is, they may think the synthetic will do some cleaning up of the engine internals and should be changed sooner.

Doug,

Just took my Impala for a spin cuz the weather is fantastic! Unfortunately for my OLM after my little freeway cruise and filling it up today I already noticed it was down to 98%
How conserative did you say it was??? Regardless I'm going by the OLM and not by their advise verbally. CCan the OLM be manipulated by the dealership to go down to zero faster???

Good question. Id think it possible, but involving more time and trickery than a service department would really have to devote to one vehicle, unless it was a rich person or special special project...

?

HH,

That just came to mind just after getting my car washed and waxed. I pose this possible question to anyone.... I only drove about 50 miles since yesterday and it seems that I already lost 2% of my OLM life.

My main issue is that the dealership relies on the old service standard long ago dispite the new GM "OLM" monitor. I wonder if the head office knows these guys are doing this just to get more money it seems. I hope GM is going back to there old coniving ways of old.

Two oil changes on that Impala?
How many miles accumulated on the speedometer since purchased new? I'm assuming you are the original owner.
