Long time lurker for information but here’s my first post. Changed the oil on my wife’s Mazda CX-5 today. Been running Mobil 1 filter M108-A for the last few oil changes without issue. Dropped the filter today and while pouring oil out of it I noticed something was hanging out of jt. The material was some sort of dark rubber or soft plastic. It seemed attached inside one of the outer holes on the filter, I tugged on it and it broke easily. Upon further inspection I noticed another piece that had not come out of the home and was sitting inside of the filter. Any ideas what this could be?

Second issue, took the new filter out of the box, same M108-A and it appeared the was some hard glue like substance on the outer rim of the filter. I picked some off with my finger. Knowing that it was a bad idea to run that filter I ran down to Napa and picked up a gold 7002.

After today I’ll only be running the Napa golds.

Welcome and congrats on your first post!

Did you happen to cut the filter open?

I haven't been impressed with Mobil 1 filters.
Too much glue and bad pleat spacing.
Ultras look far better!

I didn’t have the time today, maybe tomorrow if I can. Am I right in thinking the oil enters the filter through the outer holes, passes through the filter media, then return to the engine in the center larger hole?

I’m just perplexed where the “stuff” came from. From the engine or from the filter itself.

Car only has 14,xxx miles and so far runs awesome.

If you decide to contact mobil 1 dont cut the filter open. They will most likely want there filters intact and inspect it themselves.

Hmm. Not good. I have the opposite issue. With cartridge filters, the M1s always look better than the Ultras.

I purchase the filters along with Mobil 1, or PP oils from Walmart.

I’ve reached out to Mobil so will probably hold off on cutting the filter open.

Good idea. Did the video help explain how a canister filter works?

Not really but I searched on my own. Enters from the perimeter and return through the central hole.

The foreign material is on the input side of the filter. The filtered oil travels up thru the center hole. I suspect that came out of the engine, in any case it would never have made it to the filtered side.

That could very well be the case.

How much was the Napa filter? I found the wix 57002 is as or more expensive than the dealer filter so I use the dealer filter. I’d love to use an ultra but it has an ADBV and the stocker doesn’t.

I agree with ragtoplvr. It's a bonus from Mazda, and not their first.

When I first removed the original factory filter from my Mazda, it had a large piece of metal shaving stuck halfway through one inlet hole.

I’d like to say it was $9.

I hope the material wasn’t something from within the engine. God only knows what internal plastic/rubber component could be chewing itself up. I don’t know exactly what it was but it was long and thin. Pulled apart pretty easy. Ugggg

Picture and description make the debris excess gasket sealer in my mind.

That debris had to have come from the engine. I'd bet you didn't see it there when you installed that filter when new.
