Two issues with Mobil 1 filter M108-A

Finally got an answer from Mobil.

Here is it copy and pasted from my email:

Your filter has a piece sealant compound that was not in the correct position on the filter during manufacturing. As a result the black sealant compound was on the back plate of the filter as shown in your picture. We found the problem soon after it started but a some filters did get into the market place. Engineering has determined the material will stay attached to the baseplate in most cases not getting into the filter media. If however a piece would get down into the filter it would be caught and would not get it to the engine. Your car engine would not have been affected. We thank you for using our filters and regret you had an issue with one of our them. I hope this answers your questions.

Did they at least offer you some free oil filters for their mistake?

Who responded? I thought there was still some question on who built the new "suffix A" filters, I don't think Champ Labs (nor Fram) builds them any more?

No offers of any type, not that I asked for anything up front. Just said we’re sorry, we messed up.

Mobil has their name on the filter, so they are ultimately responsible for their product, regardless who actually manufactured it. They need to ensure their supplier puts out quality products - ie, supplier management.

They should have sent you some free filters, at least to cover the defective ones.

Hey man, our bad we will do better next time isn’t enough in my book.

I had a RP filter that caused some start up tick on the wife’s escape. Within 48 hours of contact they had a new filter and a replacement quart of RP 5w20 at my front door.

Shame everyone doesn’t have the same dedication to customer service.

I picked up one of these at Walmart today. As I checked the first one it looked like a elementary school kid kid got wild with the glue. It was all over the baseplate. The next one looked much better.

Maybe on break? The robot definitely got wild with that one. I would have taken pics but the aisle had several people in it plus a employee on a ladder stocking shelves.

The problem I see with this is what if te filter goes into bypass? Then it could travel through the filter bypass down the center tube and on elsewhere, depending on the filter bypass (if any) design. Here's a similar case on a Pennzoil PZ-42 filter manufactured by Purolator in the BITOG archives.

I agree it seems Champ Labs oil filter manufacturing has taken a turn for the worse subsequent to the Frampion breakup.
