Two filters?

2007 Toyota Corolla @ 11,000 miles I opened the air cleaner box to see how the OEM air filter looked. Wide pleats and no rubber gasket around the edge: [image]

Then I looked underneath the "lid" of the box (upsteam from the replaceable filter) and found a second filter. This one is not replaceable. It has a plastic screen over a fiber material: [image]

Is this common on newer cars? I've never seen this before. What is its purpose? It's not as dense as the first filter so it wouldn't trap smaller paricles.
 
My car has the same engine/air filter that your Corolla has, and also that extra "filter".

According to this link , that extra filter absorbs fuel vapors when the engine is shut off, and it does not need to be replaced like the regular air filter.
