TV stands...where should i look?

although i still have about 6-7 months before i get our new HDTV (40" / 42" max), I think it's good to get the Tv stand before that...our current old-style entertainment ctr won't house the new TV at all...
This will be for the living room.

I'm looking for a simple, flat, longish (not VERY long) stand where one can just put the TV on it, (no mounting etc) and use the shelves below for components, which I only have 4-5 of.
we don't need a huge one where it goes around the TV...just need an "open" type one with a top for the TV to stand on, and some shelves underneath, with simple wire management.
Ideally a combo of wood/glass is best, but wood/metal is also ok. wifey doesn't want just metal/glass...we need a bit of wood in it...
should be simple, and not very pricey.

if you guys have any ideas on where (online/B&M both ok) to get a decent looking, but not too pricey stand like that, let me know...

I found mine in sitting out for the garbage at a house a mile or two away whilst walking.....oak. Ran home, fired the beast up.....a few fixes, a couple bomb cans of black and it's been in service for two years. Oh I thought this was the cheapskate thread...sorry.

Solid wood doors are sturdy. Cut to size and support with concrete blocks, but don't make it look like you're from the ghetto or a college dorm, instead use some of those fancy design concrete blocks. If you're real uppity you can even paint the blocks and door the same color.

I'm way too lazy for all that...great suggestion for a more motivated person, though.

Ashley Furniture Stores. I normally don't recommend them for furniture, but their TV stands are perfectly acceptable, and reasonable to boot. BTW, when you are looking for big screens, check out the Sony LCD with the Bravia engine. And don't bother with 720p, go the full 1080. Not much more money, and an incredible picture. Direct TV is cheaper, and has more HD channels than Dish Network. Their HD package is 5 bucks am onth, and currently has 85 HD channels, going to 105 early '08. Blu Ray rocks, and has more expansion capability for the future, with interactive stuff on the disk, and interfacing with web content just around the corner. Truly exciting stuff.

OT: according to all I read, if you're sitting further than 6-7 feet from a 40" LCD, there is NO difference in PQ between 720p and 1080p...and I don't sit close to a TV and do gaming etc. I'm still deciding though..if i do go 1080p, it's ok, perhaps it's future proof, but if i see a very good 720p deal in 6-7 months, I will get 720p and put the saved $$ into a HD dvd player instead of 1080p TV and an upconverting dvd player..
oh, I'm sure they're very popular, but I tend to stay away from anything Sony, which is totally overpriced. for e.g Toshiba offers same PQ with more features and better build-quality for the money, IMO.

I can get the following for $209, from walmart, shipped free to the nearest store...other internet prices range from $245 to $265 shipped...I think it looks pretty ok (simple, but does the job, but not too simple that it looks bad..)
all the reviews are very good, and stated that it's pretty solid for the price, and actully darker than this online pic.

It would be a good idea to go lay your hands on one and eyeball it up close before you buy it. At the least another piece of furniture made by the same company.

Make sure it is high enough so that you aren't looking through your feet when they are propped up on the coffee table or recliner!

have no coffee table in front of the TV...(it's to the side...)
good point though...
in our case, the height is pretty much perfect...
