Before you get a 1080p check the signal that you get from your cable or dish. If most of it is 720 then no need for a 1080p. Your refersh rate should be 60hz or better. I have seen some 42" flat screens here at Target for $400 and they were 1080p. The last TV I got was a 37" Panasonoc flat 720p in an opened box at Best Buy for $299.

I would not be looking at that brand if I wanted a TV to last.
They are all a [censored] shoot as far as I am concerned, but I trust one brand above all else. Panasonic. YMMV.

Verizon Fios should be GTG with the 1080p set and 120hz that I'm looking into.

The first one has 10 watt per channel speakers, the second is 8W per channel. All other things being equal I would go for the one with slightly more powerful speakers. If either one has forward firing speakers as opposed to downward firing speakers it will make a big difference, forward being better. At the price I doubt either will have astounding sound but try to listen to both if at all possible. Reviews on the first one looked decent considering I couldn't find a heck of a lot. Less reviews on the second one, not enough to be definitive.

Make sure a 42" screen is large enough for your viewing area. Folks just coming into the flat screen scene often buy too small of a screen. There are formulas to determine the best size for the viewing distance.

Of the 2 choices:VIZIO E420i-A1 42-inch 1080p 120Hz LED Smart HDTV

We've got a 55" XVT553SV Vizio TruLED HDTV with Internet Apps.No issues and picture quality is awsome! People who say otherwise,do not have their TV's not setup properly.

I'll have this today, thanks for replies. VIZIO E420i-A1 42-inch 1080p 120Hz LED Smart HDTV.

I know it can happen with any brand but it left me with a bad taste. I heard Vizio was good so I started there. Thanks for the replies.

If you need a TV ASAP go pick up one (or both) of the Vizio models at Walmart and try it out, they have a 90 day return period.

Just keep all the packaging in good order, and the receipt of course. I always leave the protective wrappings intact on a TV that I may not keep.

Reviews are a good point of reference to narrow things down, but nothing compares to a real test drive in my opinion.

I grabbed a Vizio and love it! Now debating on if a 4 year extended warranty is worth $80 or not? I usually pass on those things but have another week or so to decide.

My friends bought a Vizio 60" LCD around a year and a half ago. The motherboard gradually went out on it. First, the side HDMI port went out. Then another HDMI port went out. Then the channels on the coax cable stopped changing, and it was stuck on MTV. Eventually, only the RCA jacks worked. Then after a couple months, the channels started changing on regular cable... but the HDMI never came back.

They sell motherboards on eBay for $120-140 to fix it, but they just decided to get a new 46" LED TV for $350. Not all entirely bad for them, but they were kinda lucky to get that price right before Christmas.
